Mittagsruhe. Öl auf Leinwand. 45,5 x 60 cm. Rechts unten signiert "J. Köckert", verso mit Fragmenten zweier alter Ausstellungsetiketten. Um 1875. Julius Köckert, Sohn des Opernsängers und späteren Direktors der Theater in Köln und Aachen Gustav Köckert, erhielt seine erste künstlerische Ausbildung an den Akademien in Koblenz und Köln. 1843 ging er nach Prag, um sein Studium im Atelier von Christoph Christian Ruben zu vollenden. 1848 siedelte er nach Bayern über und ließ sich schließlich 1850 in München nieder, wo er sich als Historien- und Genremaler etablierte. Seine enge Freundschaft mit Wilhelm von Kaulbach führte auch zu verschiedenen öffentlichen Aufträgen für großformatige Wandmalereien. Durch ein Augenleiden fast erblindet, konnte er einige Jahre kaum arbeiten, jedoch konnte er durch eine neuartige Operation weitgehend geheilt werden und war bis zum Ende seines Lebens äußerst produktiv und erfolgreich tätig. - Provenienz: Sammlung Th. H. Thomann. Rudolf Bangel, Frankfurt, Auktion 965 am 2. Oktober 1918, Los 47. Sammlung Kurt Lindauer (?, laut schwer lesbarem rückseitigem Etikett). Köckert, Julius 1827 Leipzig - 1918 München In Erwartung L. u. signiert. Öl auf Lwd. 32 x 25 cm. Min. besch. Rahmen. Köckert ließ sich 1850 in München nieder und arbeitete zeitweise als Gehilfe seines Freundes Wilhelm von Kaulbach, der ihn zur Freskomalerei anregte, Köckert schuf u.a. vier Fresken für das Alte Bayerische Nationalmuseum (heute Museum Fünf Kontinente) in München. Darüber hinaus war er ein überaus erfolgreicher Genremaler, dessen beliebte Sujets durch xylographische Reproduktionen weite Verbreitung erfuhren.

On a hill in front of a dark pine forest a group of figures with horses and wagon is resting at a fire. On the left the prospect of a wide landscape with a river and a city opens up. The whole scene is illuminated by the light of a setting sun, while the moon is already showing itself through the clouds on the horizon. The oil painting is signed and dated lower right ‘J. Köckert 1882’. The canvas is relined, the paint layer shows overall craquelure and is varnished. Additionally there are occasional touch-ups. Apart from that the overall condition is age-appropriate good. The frame bears occasional material losses and slight signs of age and wear. The painting measures 59 x 98.5 cm, the framed dimensions are 79.5 x 119 cm. Julius Köckert (1827-1918) Julius Köckert was born in Leipzig as the son of an opera singer. He began his artistic training in Koblenz and Cologne and continued it in 1843 at the Academy in Prague with the genre painter Christian Ruben. Köckert moved to Bavaria in 1948, where he settled in Munich after a stay in Frauenchiemsee. He was known for his genre paintings situated in the Bavarian mountains, which were widely distributed though engravings and woodcuts.
