        Nov. 28, 2024

        MELA KÖHLER* (Vienna 1885 - 1960 Stockholm)

        Est: €500 - €800

MELA KÖHLER* (Vienna 1885 - 1960 Stockholm) Young lady with floral dress, 1916 pencil and watercolor/paper 31,5 x 20 cm dated 2 Juli 1916 SCHÄTZPREIS / ESTIMATE € 500 - 800 STARTPREIS / STARTING PRICE € 500 Melanie Leopoldina Köhler, married Broman (Koehler-Broman), was an Austrian painter, graphic artist, illustrator, watercolorist and employee of the Wiener Werkstätte (WW) - there she signed as MELA KOEHLER). Köhler attended the Hohenberger painting school for two years and was trained at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) as a student of Koloman Moser, Rosalia Rothansl and Bertold Löffler, probably 1908 - 1912. She then worked as a freelance artist. Her works were already published during her school education, e.g. in "The Studio". She designed postcards for WW and for the publishers Brothers Kohn and Munk, mainly as fashion depictions, often as greeting cards (especially for Christmas). She was also an employee of the magazine “Wiener Mode” and a freelancer, among others, at the publishers Brüder Kohn, Verlag Rosenberger, Munk Verlag (cards with Judaism motifs) and at Carl Konegen's publishing house (illustrated fairy tale books). In 1916, she designed gift packaging for Bahlsen. In 1931, Köhler moved to Sweden and married in Stockholm, one year later. She continued to create book illustrations, watercolour figure compositions and portraits of women and children. She also designed costumes for theater and ballet as well as postcards, etc., with motifs from Carl Michael Bellman's "Fredman's Epistles" for the publishing house "Sagokonst", Stockholm (1940). PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° at the estimate), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. This amounts to 13% for paintings, drawings, graphic works and sculptures and 20% for photographs and all other items. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

PHOTOS TO COME / RARE Wiener Werkstatte Postcard by reknowned artisan MELA KOEHLER ... Postcard No 758 ... The Wiener Werkstätte (or Vienna Workshops) was an association of artists and artisans founded in 1903 by architect Josef Hoffmann and designer Koloman Moser with the support of textile industrialist Fritz Waerndorfer. By designing every aspect of daily life, they hoped to create a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) and eliminate the distinction between high (fine) and low (decorative) art. This goal was shared by members of the Vienna Secession, a broader aesthetic group begun in 1897 by Gustav Klimt and other artists, and is related to the principles of the British Arts and Crafts movement, which aimed to recapture the high-quality craftsmanship found in preindustrialized society. In 1907, the workshop began producing a numbered series of postcards, a line that was immediately popular and would eventually include nearly a thousand designs. The cards were a way to advertise the products the firm created, as well as an inexpensive vehicle for sharing good design with a large audience. All the major artists associated with the workshop illustrated postcards, including Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Dagobert Peche, and Egon Schiele. Women such as Hilda Jesser, Mela Koehler, and Maria Likarz created some of the most exceptional images. Fine condition measures 3 1/2'' x 5 1/2''
