Henry Koehler (American, 1927-2018) Before the Race watercolor and charcoal on paper signed Henry Koehler (lower right) 17 x 22 inches. Property from the Collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill, Southampton, New York Note: The first sequence of lots in this auction come from the Southampton, New York home of the collectors Catherine Cahill, who is now deceased, and William L. Bernhard, who continues to live in their Park Avenue home in Manhattan. Lifelong New Yorkers, they passed the summers in Southampton and Washington, Connecticut, and the winters in Palm Beach, where Ms. Cahill decorated their retreat on Major Alley Way with the noted interior designer, Keith Irvine of Irvine and Fleming. Ms. Cahill was an animal rights activist, and a daughter of John T. Cahill, a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and a named partner in the international law firm, Cahill Gordon & Reindel. Mr. Bernhard is a philanthropist and a descendant of the Lehman family of investment banking fame. He has served on many Boards of Directors, including the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, Film at Lincoln Center and the Winston Churchill Foundation. Another sequence of lots from this collection will be included in our June 18 Palm Beach Treasures online-only auction.

Henry Koehler was an American artist, known for Sporting horse genre, aviation, marine. Koehler was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City, serving as its first vice president, and of the Yale Association of Fine Arts in New Haven. He exhibited at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and at prominent galleries and racetracks in New York City, California, New Jersey, Virginia, Kentucky, England, Ireland, France, and Italy. By the time the legendary jockey's career was over, he was known as "the Queen's favorite jockey." The Queen knighted Piggott in 1975 and at the 2019 Epsom Derby unveiled a statue of him by the winner's enclosure. Henry Koehler (American, 1927‚àí2018) Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Koehler graduated from Yale University and worked in advertising in New York. Entering the freelance arena, he received his first commission from Sports Illustrated. At first he documented his favorite sports, foxhunting and sailing, then added the world of horse racing.
