Original This Is the Enemy Poster 1942 by Karl Kohler & Victor Ancona

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

A high ranking German soldier cooly stares off into the distance; his monacle's reflection reveals he is watching a hanging. This dramatic poster from World War II effectively captures the callous nature of "the Enemy". It was created at a time of fierce opposition to the US joining the war. It is one of the most iconic and important images created in America during WWII. Created by Karl Koehler and Victor Ancona as a team, this poster was one of the winners of the International Business Machines Corp. Award of the National War Poster Competition. The National War Poster Competition was co-sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the R. Hoe & Company, which began as a New York based printing press in 1805. By World War II, the R. Hoe & Company had shifted to parts manufacturing. There were 2,224 entries for the competition and 9 works were awarded special honors. The Sacrifice - The Privilege of Free Men was one of the recipients of the award. The collection of the 9 winning posters, including this one by Koehler and Ancona, are highly sought after by collectors. Karl Koehler (1913-2000) and Victor Ancona (1912-1998) created this poster as a team. Victor Ancona studied art at the Parsons School of Design and worked as a commercial artist and advertising executive. He was serving as a private in the Army at the time that this poster was designed. Karl Koehler trained at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia, and began his career creating industrial designs and promotions. After the War, he became one of the most prominent designers of Christmas cards of the Twentieth Century. This is an Original Vintage Poster. It is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of our posters.

KARL KOEHLER (1913-2000) & VICTOR ANCONA (1912-1998) THIS IS THE ENEMY. 1942. 34x24 inches, 86 1/2x61 cm. Grinnell Lithographic Co., New York. Condition A-: minor tears and abrasions at edges. Paper. The horrifying scene of a hanging reflects in the monocle of this high-ranking member of Germany's military. "At the start of the United States' involvement in World War II, the Roosevelt administration felt the need to counter the powerful anti-war messages of such media figures as newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and radio personality Father Coughlin. [This image] echoes Roosevelt's characterization of the Axis powers as gangsters, bandits and criminals," (American p. 105). This chilling image was the winner of the National War Poster Competition of 1942 held under the auspices of the Museum of Modern Art. American Style 67, Modern Poster 193, Modern American 55, Avant Garde p. 177, Rhodes p. 168, Pollack p. 229, MoMA 147.1968.

        This is the Enemy. 1942.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: KARL KOEHLER (1913-2000), VICTOR ANCONA (1912-1998), & STEPHEN ANCONA (1932- ) SIZE: 24 x 34 1/4 in./61 x 87 cm PRINTER: Grinnell Lithographic Co., New York DESCRIPTION: This famous image won the 1942 National War Poster Competition sponsored by the Hoe Printing Press, Artists for Victory, Inc., the Council for Democracy, and the Museum of Modern Art. The silhouette of a hanged man is reflected in the monocle of this remorseless SS Officer, but what really strikes us is the fusion of caricature – the elongated nose, for example – with crisply defined, realistic details, like the stubble on the sideburns and the cording on the cap. As if to say, "Impossible but true: the caricature and the awful reality are one and the same. This is the enemy." (War; Propaganda; Modern)
