Hermanus Koekkoek (Dutch, 1815-1882) - A Calm Estuary Signed and dated ‘H Koekkoek 1857’ bottom right, oil on canvas  22 x 30 in. (55.9 x 76.2cm) Provenance Richard Green, London, United Kingdom. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Florida.  Lot Essay We wish to thank the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, also known as R.K.D., for their kind assistance in authenticating, and cataloguing the present Lot The present painting was likely executed toward the end of Koekkoek’s time in Amsterdam, to which he would return toward the end of his life, bracketed by a brief time in Nieuwer-Amstel. Hermanus was the youngest of four sons born to painter Jan Hermanus Koekkoek, and Koekkoek was arguably the most well-known family of painters in 19th-century Holland. Despite the disappearing clouds, Koekkoek deliberately leaves clear and blue a large swath of the sky at upper center left, indicating that a storm has subsided. The resultant effect is one of calm, stillness, and tranquility, rendered with great optical fidelity, and detail, the shimmering light on the water and along the shore at right adding to the work’s overall charm.

      Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder (1815-1882)

      Est: £1,500 - £3,000

Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder (1815-1882) Fisherfolk and boats on a beach, believed to be Scheveningen signed lower left oil on canvas 42 x 58cm The present subject is highly evocative of views of Scheveningen church above the dunes first popularised by numerous Dutch artists of the 17th century. Scheveningen was also depicted by other members of the Koekkoek family, including Jan H. B. Koekkoek. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. An old tear in the canvas has been repaired through lining but the edges are starting to lift and old overpaint has darkened giving the area a slightly grubby appearance. The paint layers are stable overall apart from a localised area at the left hand side which is raised a flaking. Overpaint is present, mainly located in the sky and slightly mismatched to the original. The varnish is slightly yellowed but even and glossy.

HERMANUS KOEKKOEK SENIOR (DUTCH 1815-1882) Sailing off the Dutch coast signed and dated Koekkoek/1862 (lower right) oil on canvas 32 x 48 cm PROVENANCE: W H Patterson, Albemarle Street, Mayfair, London W1 Purchased from the above by the present owner in 1996 Catalogue Note: The marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek Snr was the youngest of the four artist brothers that founded the Koekkoek dynasty. Hermanus was the father of Hermanus jr and Willem, who also became highly successful artists. He worked in Amsterdam from 1832 to 1858 when he moved to Nieuwer-Amstel and then returned to Amsterdam in 1873. Soon he became a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam and in 1841 of the Rotterdam Society. In 1876 Hermanus exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in London. An exceptionally talented painter of marine scenes with an ability to observe and transform what he had seen into paint, with a particular responsiveness to light, colour, and mood. Koekkoek specialised in the subject, much admired for his atmospheric skies, as in the present lot, the sun passing between the clouds, illuminating parts of the city beyond, and numerous, beautifully detailed figures collecting pots and tending to the sails navigating through the choppy waters, giving the spectator a romantic impression of the lives of fishermen. His work is now represented in a large number of museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Groningen, Enkhuizen and Leeuwarden, in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1821 to 1860. He also exhibited at the British Institute, the Royal Society of British Artists and the National Watercolour Society.

He was a pupil of his father, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851), like his brother, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), and followed in the tradition of his famous family of painters.
