The sharpness and detail of this composition surpass many of his later paintings, which are often painted with a coarser brushstroke. The artistic quality here surpasses many compositions by contemporaries such as Cornelis Springer (1817-1891) and Adrianus Eversen (1818-1897).

Willem Koekkoek's cityscapes are a combination of historical reconstruction and fantasy. His paintings were especially beloved abroad because they matched the idyllic image that people there had of old Dutch towns.

His father, Hermanus Koekkoek, was known for his marine depictions, and his grandfather, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, was a well-known Dutch artist and draftsman whose works may now be seen at the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam) as well as the Dordrechts Museum and the Museum Jan Cunen in Oss. Willem Koekkoek and his three brothers received their first art lessons from their father. He also received training as an architect, which is perhaps what influenced his choice of subject matter throughout his artist career. Koekkoek first exhibited his works in 1859, and following this he held yearly showings at the Royal Academy of Art and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam between 1865 and 1894. The artist had two sons who also followed the family tradition; Marinus Adrianus became an illustrator specializing in birds, and his brother, Hermanus Wilem became a painter of military subjects.

          Willem Koekkoek, 1839 Amsterdam – 1895 Nieuwer-Amstel

          Est: €75,000 - €90,000

FANTASIEVOLLE NIEDERLÄNDISCHE STADTANSICHT Öl auf Leinwand. 85 x 124 cm. Rechts unten auf Fenstersims signiert „W Koekkoek“. In dekorativem vergoldeten Rahmen. Winter Day in a Dutch Town

          Est: €15,000 - €25,000

KOEKKOEK, WILLEM 1839 Amsterdam - 1895 Nieuwer-Amstel (Amstelveen) Title: Winter Day in a Dutch Town. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 44.5 x 60.5cm. Notation: Signed lower right: W. Koekkoek. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Willem Koekkoek, the master of the detailed Dutch vedute of the late 19th century, came from the famous Dutch painter dynasty Koekkoek, which was also based in the Lower Rhine Kleve. Willem was the son of Hermanus Koekkoek, known mainly for his marines, and nephew of the most famous representative Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, whose romantic landscape paintings influenced whole generations. The painter and chronicler traveled the Netherlands and its cities with his sketchbooks. Drawing on his travels, he captured a wide variety of views of important buildings and typical scenes. From these pencil studies he then composed his Capricci in the studio, which met with great response and secured him an audience throughout Europe. As in the works of his model Cornelis Springer, Koekkoek combines the warmth emanating from the colours of the brick walls with a narrative aspect of city life - and a captivating precision in technique and painting. From our modern perspective, Willem Koekkoek's vedute are almost photographic renditions of a past city life - and often documents of buildings and cityscapes lost today. We thank Guido De Werd, Cologne, for confirming the attribution of the present painting after examination of the original. Explanations to the Catalogue

The artist, who had lived in Amsterdam for some time, would have known the district well. Willem Koekkoek: Winter Street Scene in Culemborg near Utrecht

KOEKKOEK, WILLEM 1839 Amsterdam - 1895 Nieuwer-Amstel (Amstelveen) Title: Winter Street Scene in Culemborg near Utrecht. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 88 x 125cm. Notation: Signed lower right: W. Koekkoek. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. We see an everyday view of a small Dutch town, a barge has moored on a canal and men are carrying the load, hay, across the picture; individuals are talking in the background in front of an entrance door. The typical clinker brick buildings are precisely drawn and stagger diagonally in perspective into the depth of the picture. Warm winter sunlight makes the brick glow in many nuances. In the background, a characteristic tower towers above the residential buildings and makes this everyday scene a historical document: we are in Culemborg, not far from Utrecht. The characteristic building complex is not accidental, but corresponds to a precise sketch drawn on site by Willem Koekkoek, the chronicler of historical architecture in Holland. Willem Koekkoek, from the great family of painters from Kleve, spread over several generations of the 19th century, is artistically oriented to the representatives of the romantic Dutch fine painting such as Cornelis Springer or Frederik Marinus Kruseman. These are characterized by a tremendous precision in the technique of painting, which is combined with a warmth in the colouring and a narrative aspect of the representation. Almost always there are busy street views, which give insight into the everyday world of past centuries. Special attention was paid to the recognizability of the respective cities; usually given by individual prominent buildings or church towers. Thus, they still serve as documents of urban history, bringing back to us lost views. Just like his fellow painters, Willem Koekkoek traveled through his homeland and recorded scenes in his numerous sketchbooks, from which he later composed the great vedute in his studio. The characteristic complex shown here with the tower in Culemborg is also found in one of his sketchbooks. The accompanying note provides information about the exact vantage point: " te zien mit de tuin von de Heer Tegelen". We thank Guido De Werd, Cologne, who confirmed the attribution after examining the present painting in the original.

          Est: $50,000 - $80,000

Willem Koekkoek (Dutch, 1839–1895) A Busy Street in a Dutch Town Signed 'W. Koekkoek' bottom right, oil on canvas 33 x 48 3/4 in. (83.8 x 123.8cm) provenance: Sotheby's, London, sale of November 27, 1985, lot 182 (as Figures in the Market Square). Acquired directly from the above sale. MacConnal-Mason Gallery, London, United Kingdom. Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Virginia. NOTE: Willem Koekkoek was a member of one of the best known and most highly regarded families of realist painters in 19th century Holland. Born in Amsterdam, he was the grandson of Jan Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851), the son of Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder (1815-1882) and the brother of Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek (1840-1912). Willem studied art under his father, a marine painter, and soon became one of the most distinguished painters in the country, best known for his extremely detailed town scenes that were inspired by his numerous trips to The Hague, Utrecht, and Nieuwer Amstel throughout the 1880s. Concentrating almost exclusively on Netherlandish townscapes, which he preferred to imagine rather than copy directly from nature, Koekkoek found a successful market for his work amongst the affluent middle class in the Netherlands and Great Britain, particularly in London, where the artist moved in 1888. The present lot, along with Lot 27, are two quintessential examples of the artist's body of work in the 1880s. A Busy Street in a Dutch Town, is particularly impressive because of its large size, but also because of Koekkoek's ability to capture the effervescence of a bustling town and to suggest a certain nostalgia, true to Holland's Age of Romanticism. We wish to thank the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, also known as R.K.D, for their kind assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
