TERENCE KOH (CANADIAN B. 1977)MYTH OF A MYTH, MARY, 2004Cast statuette, plaster, metal, gold and gold leaf with glass display case58.5 x 45 x 45cm (23 x 17½ x 171/2in.)Provenance:Peres Projects, Los AngelesAcquired from the above in 2007 The Canadian artist Terence Koh has courted popularity and controversy in equal measure. Koh has received solo exhibitions at MUSAC, Kunsthalle Zürich, and the Vienna Secession; his work can be found in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and Tate Modern. From his beginnings as the creator of a zine under the alias 'asianpunkboy', Koh has pushed the envelope with infamous audacity. His irreverent œuvre combines lofty conceptualism and spirituality with alternative punk aesthetics. Koh's 2006 Untitled (Medusa) featured erection-bearing statuettes of the Virgin Mary; a similarly modified sculpture of Jesus infamously provoked uproar and even legal charges when it was exhibited in 2008. Myth of a Myth, Mary is a work of similar tensions: covered in gold leaf, the religious figurine has been displaced and installed in a pot.

TERENCE KOH (Beijing 1977 - lives and works in New York) Untitled (Whitehead). 2006. Plaster sculpture, partly with conscious damage (original) in glass case. Signed, numbered and dated on the glass box: KOH 8/10 2006. From a series of 10 unique pieces. 32.5 x 50 x 30 cm. With the confirmation of authenticity by the artist and Peres Projects, Los Angeles/Berlin, 29 November 2006. Provenienz: - Stiftung Kunsthalle Zurich. - Purchased from the above in 2006 by the present owner, private collection Switzerland. Born in 1977 in Beijing, Terence Koh grew up in Canada. In no time he conquered the New York art world under the name Asian Punk Boy. His work takes on a variety of styles and formats, and ranges from installations, to objects and wall-mounted works, to performances. Equally colourful are the materials used, which Koh introduces into his works. Thus, materials such as glass, gold or plastic, in just about any form, as well as organic materials, such as vegetables or even blood may be found in his works. In terms of content, this results in works which can be perceived on a physical as well as spiritual level, and which form a universe within themselves. Koh’s self-dramatization is repeatedly the focus of his work, so that the artist himself becomes a complete work of art. The targeted crossing of boundaries combined with the decadent form of expression are thereby a constant presence in his work. This is manifested through a predominantly polymorphically twisted sexual form of expression, which is cross-cultural and goes beyond temporal and geographic contexts. Traditional cultural practices encounter aspects of contemporary culture. A dialogue between opposites is created, which accentuates and illuminates current social themes. In this way the artist creates a space, which awakens a feeling of confusion in his public on the one hand. At the same time, he generates a sense of fascination for his art, which captivates the viewer. The present work is one of hundreds of vitrines in different formats. Their contents were collected by the artist at flea markets, porcelain shops and similar places. The vitrines contain items of kitsch and art objects, as well as ritual or tourist items, which are presented transposed and interpreted in his own way. In this way Koh creates a subjective cosmos, which reminds us of the transience of humanity and at the same time illuminates it in a pleasing and yet eerie way. So, duality in its extremes is yet again present. With his art Koh creates a space which ruptures conventional ways of life shaped by globalisation, and opens up the possibility of self-determination and discourse. --------------- TERENCE KOH (Peking 1977 - lebt und arbeitet in New York) Ohne Titel (Whitehead). 2006. Gipsskulptur, teils bewusst beschädigt, in Glaskasten. 32,5 x 50 x 30 cm. Mit der Bestätigung der Authentizität durch Peres Projects, Los Angeles/Berlin und dem Künstler vom 29. November 2006.

The Whole Family: Untitled 6 (Flag). Polyester, white felt, thread, automotive paint. 2003. Circa 62 x 93 cm. From an edition of 3. From the series "The Whole Family", an installation project exhibited at Peres Projects, Los Angeles in 2003. Aside from the edition there are 2 additional artist's proofs. The phrase "INTEGRA ASIANPUNKBOY SANGUIS" is stitched to the flag. Framed. Terence Koh, who is better known by his monikers "asianpunkboy" or "Kohbunny", has achieved international notoriety through his minimalistic, monochrom installation objects and ritualistic performances. Inspired by various subjects such as mythology and religion, he investigates themes of identity, power, fashion and sexuality, often in provocative ways. In his work, he addresses beauty and the transcendence of emptiness, the interdependence of life and death, as well as foreboding constellations. Terence Koh's work is marked by contradictions: on the one hand a precise graphic language with the simple colors black and white and opulent materials with glittering surface on the other. In the process many of his works tend to acquire a schismatic quality. Glamour and the gay underground scene, decadence and decay, are opposite themes which enhance his repertoire. Koh's work can be found in numerous private and public collections, such as; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York or The Tate Modern, London. He has had solo-exhibitions at the Mary Boone Gallery, New York; the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt; Peres Projects, Los Angeles; The Whitney Museum, New York and The Wiener Secession, Wien. Within the framework of an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Zürich, Koh installed two gigantic torso sculptures formed out of 700 kilograms of white chocolate, which were then covered in a ton of powdered sugar. The pigment of innocence, the 'non-color' white, has become an obsession for the artist. It almost seems as if it has given him an new image. Framed.
