Naoki Koide Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1968 -

Naoki Koide is a sculptor who makes jarring-yet-humorous biomorphic figures that reference people or animals in the artist’s life. These motifs and autobiographical references have remained constant through various stylistic changes. According to Koide, “If I can’t project these people [around me who I know] into my works then I can’t know if what I am doing is right or not.” Even the animals are based upon those that are familiar to him. Koide typically works with fiber-reinforced polyester resin in a range of finishes, from high gloss to matte or textured. He has also taken to painting his sculptures with a spray gun in ways that do not correspond to the sculptures’ forms. More recently, Koide has begun to experiment with wood and ceramics.
