                  Dec. 04, 2024

JIŘÍ KOLÁŘ A BĚLA KOLÁŘOVÁ - ONE RING MORE, ONE RING LESS...

                  Est: -

Běla Kolářová worked on artistic experiments in parallel with her husband Jiří Kolář. At first she worked with photographic methods and during the 1960s she began to arrange photographs of objects and small objects into geometric grids. From his poetic roots, Jiří Kolář has shaped himself as an autodidact through various stages in his work to become one of the most respected artists of European stature. The work "One ring more, one ring less..." is exceptional because both Mr. and Mrs. Kolář worked on it together and imprinted it with their distinctive style and poetics. The Kolář "disappearance" created by the method of chiasmage and the material assemblage of Bela Kolářová looks at the female portrait in a completely new way, which is both introspective and playful and full of exaggeration. Technique: collage, assemblage, wooden board, Signed: sign. lower right: Běla Kolářová 80, JK 79

JIŘÍ KOLÁŘ 1914 - 2002 - HOMMAGE TO ALBRECHT DÜRER

                  Est: -

In the presented chiasma, Jiří Kolář probably alludes to Dürer's exceptional knowledge of mathematics and geometry, when Dürer avidly drew plans of various polygons and polyhedra and published his own book on geometry with instructions for the construction of figures shortly before he died. He regarded geometry as the basis of art. As a truly Renaissance man, he attempted to define some variables theoretically in his Four Books on Measurement, believing that, as far as technique and imagination were concerned, German artists were good but lacked the Italian knowledge of the exact. The interdisciplinary play of geometry, measurement, construction and artistic imagination was undoubtedly inspiring for Jiri Kolar, an autodidact, poet and one of the most respected artists of European stature in his time. Technique: collage, wooden board, Signed: sign. lower right: JK 72

                  Est: £1,500 - £2,000

Jiří Kolář,  Czech 1914-2002 -  Zrcadlo Dada ('Mirror Dada'), 1974;  collage and fabric and mirror assemblage on board, signed with initials and dated lower right 'JK 74' and signed, titled and dated on the reverse, 52.7 x 39.4 cm (unframed) (ARR)  Provenance:  The Albemarle Gallery, London;  private collection and thence by descent  Note:  Kolář was a Czech poet, writer and artist, his work often critical of the oppressive communist state in his home country. He would become a member of the existentialist group  Skupina 42, alongside Jindřich Chalupecký, Ivan Blatný, Josef Kainar, Jiřina Hauková and Kamil Lhoták. In his collages he sought a disruptive effect, reflecting this fragility of the world around him.  Kolář would eventually emigrate to Western Europe in the 1970s, finally settling in Paris. A large number of Kolar’s works are now in public collections, including with the Tate. His work was first exhibited in 1937 and has been shown internationally in museums including at the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1975, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid in 1996 and most recently at the National Gallery of Prague in 2018.

KOLAR, Jiri (Czech, 1914 - 2002). Passing Over. 1972. Chiasmage on board. Initialed and dated to lower right. A meticulous and dense composition in the artist’s own vernacular of chiasmage. Beginning his career as a poet, Kolar transitioned to making visual art through the 1940s and 50s. Associated with Surrealism, Constructivism, and the Fluxus movement, Kolar’s innovative approach to collage also connected him with the broader postwar European avant-garde. Frame (Plexiglas) 41 x 28 ¾”; image 39 x 27 ½”. Very good. Not examined outside frame. Third-party shipping required.
