Muzeum umění a designu Benešov, 2019. str. 31, 33 Technique: mixed media, plywood, Signed: sign. verso: Kolíbal 1974 to Jirka Š. STANISLAV KOLÍBAL 1925 - LANDSCAPE WITH A TRAIN LINE

        Est: -

The work comes from the early and very rare period of the world-famous Czech artist, sculptor and architect Stanislav Kolíbal. After the German occupation, he moved from his native Orlová in the Těšín region to Ostrava, where he was deployed to work in the mines at the end of the war. The author writes about his work from the 1940s: "Although it is mostly landscape, it is not a landscape painting, but experiences in different seasons, in different moods, mostly from the same place - namely from the window of our apartment. The fact that nobody could watch me while I was working gave me the opportunity to have my first experience with colours. Some of the watercolours were based on footage from our neighbourhood. They were never exhibited or reproduced." Kolíbal has been modelling and drawing since he was thirteen. In 1943 (at the age of eighteen) he exhibited in a group show at the House of Art in Ostrava. In the present work, the landscape can be observed as something pulsating, with an almost sculptural modelling of the terrain. We see the geometry of paths and slats rising from the ground, as if they were defining the space of one large land-art. Stanislav Kolíbal's work is represented in the collections of several international museums and galleries, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum and Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and MUMOK in Vienna. Technique: watercolour, pastel, cardboard, Signed: sign. lower right: S. Kolíbal 44

His work is counted among the fundamentals of modern Czech art. Since the 1950s, Stanislav Kolíbal has been one of the most notable personalities on the Czech art scene. He was a leading figure in the group UB 12, which played an important role in the 1960s. His language is geometry, his predominant theme the relation of illusion and reality. Eventually his emphasis turned to the need for finding rules and order. It is a meditation on the problems engendered by and linked to man's presence on Earth. From drawings used as ground plans, Stavby (Buildings), i.e. wooden and metal objects, that became Kolibal's preoccupation since the second half of the 1980s, came into being. Stanislav Kolibal has been drawing and sculpting simultaneously with his work in architecture and other creative pursuits for more than 60 years. His cycles of drawings are a key to the understanding of his highly sophisticated art. He has exhibited in numerous museums and important exhibitions: the 5th exhibition of "the Sculpture of Twenty Nations" at the Guggenheim in New York, "Paris Prague" at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and "Painting and Sculpture Today" (1980) at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Stanislav Kolíbal (1925, Orlová) is a Czech sculptor who established himself with his conceptual minimalist sculptures and installations. They don't try to portray reality and come up with something new at all costs. Spirituality, wholeness and life's work play a key role in his work, which is poured into new means of expression meaningfully and judiciously. Its art form is synthetic and parallel to reality, reflecting the basic principles of analysis and synthesis. Technique: Drypoint on paper, Signed: Lower right "Stan. Kolíbal 07"
