      Oil on canvas Germany, 1882 Max Koner (1854-1900) – German portraitist Signed and dated upper right ‘Max Koner 1.4.1882’ Dimensions: 39.5 x 36.5 cm Frame: 53 x 40 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Portrait of a man wearing a fur-trimmed coat; it is probably a portrait of the Norwegian painter Peder Balke (1804-1887)  Condition: The painting is in good condition, consistent with age. There are light marks with losses of paint, where the frame has rubbed. There is a small abrasion of paint on the right side of the sitter’s coat. Inspection under UV light reveals small retouchings throughout. The stretcher measures 39.5 x 36.5 cm. The gilt stucco frame has small traces of age and use; there is a small loss of material in the upper right corner. The framed overall dimensions are 53 x 40 cm. Max Koner (1854-1900) Born in Berlin, the painter Max Koner studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts from 1873 to 1878 and attended the classes of Eduard Daege, Eduard Holbein, Anton von Werner and Max Michael. In 1875 he traveled to Italy and in 1878 to Paris. He was initially interested in landscapes, but from 1888 he focused on portraits. Koner was one of the most recognized portraitists of his time, receiving orders from the imperial court, other noble houses and the fine Berlin society. In 1893 he was accepted as member of the Academy and received a gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in the following year. His wife, Sophie (1855-1929), was a portraitist, too, and specialized in the depiction of children. Koner repeatedly painted Kaiser Wilhelm II and further famous personalities, including Adolf von Menzel, Ernst von Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Herbert von Bismarck.
