THE PROPERTY OF A GENTLEMAN DANIEL DE KONINCK AMSTERDAM 1668 - AFTER 1720 ENGLAND A BEARDED OLD MAN READING, HALF LENGTH, WEARING A BROWN COAT AND A GOLDEN CHAIN oil on canvas PROVENANCE Offered, Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 13 December 1982, lot 43 (as by Jan Lievens). CATALOGUE NOTE Daniel de Koninck, who was member of a family of famous painters and goldsmiths, studied in Denmark under his uncle Jacob de Coninck (c.1614/6-after 1690). He then moved to England in 1690, where by the end of the 17th Century Rembrandt's popularity had started to spawn imitators.
