Adolf Konrad German, (1915 - 2003) The Childhood of Elizabeth, 1968-70 ink and acrylic on paper Signed lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in Bremen, Germany, Adolf Konrad became an American Scene painter who settled in Asbury, Flanders New Jersey. He taught at Newark State College in 1972, having studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and the Cummington School in Massachusetts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is from Jim Norman: I thought you might be interested in filing the following anecdote about Adolf Konrad, which comes to mind as I am clearing out my parents' home in Maplewood, New Jersey. Adolf Konrad was a friend of my parents, John and Bessie Norman. One night in the 1970s, they went to the San Gennaro street festival in New York. Adolf had a hot dog, and held onto the pleated wrapper, which when flattened, took on the shape of a shrine. When he got back to his studio, he sketched, in colored pencil, a whimsical madonna cradling a dove, and gave it to my parents as a memento. My father asked him to sign it, and he did: "Adolfo", retaining the spirit of the San Gennaro festival. My parents had it framed in a rich red mat and a gold box frame -- far too elegant for its humble beginnings, but appropriate to its spirit. They displayed it on their wall, one of three Konrads in their collection. (The others are a watercolor of a stormy landscape, dated 1946; and an oil landscape done in the early 1970s.) .
