          Augustus B. Koopman (North Carolina/France, 1869-1914) oil on canvas painting titled "Volendam" depicting a Dutch girl in traditional attire standing on a street knitting with figures, village architecture, and maritime landscape in the background. Signed and dated "Augustus B Koopman '95" lower right. Titled below signature. Fragmented old label affixed to frame en verso. Housed in carved and painted wood frame with gilt liner. 37 3/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 39 1/4" H x 31" W. Biography: Augustus Koopman was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris under Bouguereau. He ultimately made France his home, although he exhibited widely throughout the U.S. and Europe, becoming best known for his marine and figure paintings. His early work has been compared with modern Dutch marine painters Mesdag and Blommers. In 1912 he was elected an associate of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts. He also won a special silver medal for his decoration at the Paris Exposition of 1900, the bronze medals at the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo (1901) and at the St. Louis Exposition, and a silver medal at the Appalachian Exposition at Knoxville (1911). His portraits and decorations are represented in French and American collections in St. Louis, St. Paul, and Detroit museums; the Philadelphia Art Club; and the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences.
