Maxim Kopf liked to travel and discover unknown regions. The painting, depicting a rugged landscape with palm trees, belongs to a cycle of landscape paintings that the author created during his first stay in Tahiti. It offers an excellent example of the author's favorite work with exotic themes from his travels in Tahiti and Martinique, which he presented mainly at his solo exhibitions of Beautiful Unity in Prague in 1927, 1935 and 1937. The rarity of his works, in addition to their indisputable artistic, craft and aesthetic quality, increases and their unavailability. Kopf's work on paper is even rarer on the domestic market than works on canvas. The relaxed sketch of the Tahitian landscape represents typical and exemplary works from the given period, and the complementary tones of blue and red are used with his own bravura. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under prof. Bukovac, Thiele and Krattner and in Dresden under prof. Gussmann. The beginnings of the work were under the influence of expressionism, he painted landscapes and biblical themes, but also the theme of the Buddha. MAXIM KOPF 1892 - 1958 - A NIGHT SEASCAPE

        Est: -

The painting, depicting the sea under a full moon, belongs to a series of landscape paintings that the artist created during his stay in southern Europe in the early 1930s. The supremely expressive form belongs to the artist's virtuoso works, where he abandons simple descriptiveness and plunges headlong into an intimate experience. In undulating and wildly swirling strokes, the work captures the full range of sensations of the night, with the sound of waves crashing against nearby rocks in the ghostly pale moonlight. The vertical brushstrokes are reminiscent of sudden rain drumming on the surface of the sea. The work offers an excellent example of the artist's popular work with themes from his travels in Europe and exotic lands, which he presented mainly at his solo exhibitions of the Krasoumné jednota in Prague in 1927, 1935 and 1937. The rarity of his works, in addition to their undeniable artistic, craft and aesthetic qualities, is enhanced by their unavailability. Thanks to the artist's life fate, a large part of his works are now lost and signed works are very rare. The offered work has been assessed by Maxim Kopf's expert, Ivo Habán. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "M. Kopf"

The beginnings of his work were influenced by expressionism, he painted landscapes and biblical themes, but also the theme of the Buddha. Maxim Kopf enjoyed traveling and exploring unknown regions. The port of Algeria he paints with sovereign bravure and excels in juxtaposing valleurs of sea blue and red and yellow accents of ships and their masts or chimneys side by side in an excellent way. We can also see crimson reflections as a visual rhyme in the foreground on the water surface. The rareness of his work – in addition to the unquestionable artistic skill and aesthetic qualities it displays – increases its low availability on the market.
