      Koppay, Joszi Arpád: Dreiviertelportrait von John D. Rockefeller Bildnis von John D. Rockefeller im dunklen Anzug mit Stock. Öl auf Leinwand. 101,5 x 88 cm. Oben rechts signiert, datiert und bez. "Koppay 1909 New York". Joszi Arpád Koppay war einer der bekanntesten Bildnismaler des Adels und der höheren Gesellschaft zur Zeit der Jahrhundertwende. Nach dem Studium der Architektur in Budapest und Wien wandte sich Koppay der Malerei zu und lernte bei Hans Makart in Wien. 1884 zog er nach München, wo er als Bildnis- und Genremaler reüssierte. In der Folge arbeitete der Künstler in Madrid, Paris, London, Berlin und dann wieder in Wien. Im Jahr 1904 unternahm Koppay seine erste Reise in die USA, wo er Mitglieder der Horrigan, Roosevelt und Rockefeller Familien portraitierte. Bis 1911 verbrachte er nun jedes Jahr etwa 6 Monate in den Vereinigten Staaten, wo er ein Atelier in New York unterhielt. Vorliegendes feinsinnig aufgefasstes Bildnis Rockefellers, seiner Zeit der vermögendste Mann der Welt, entstand direkt nach dem Modell in dem New Yorker Atelier. Ein Foto (Abb. in Rudolf Lothar "Koppay", Berlin/Leipzig 1919, S. 77) zeigt unser Gemälde neben anderen Werken des Künstlers in seinem Studio. Verso auf dem Keilrahmen mit altem Klebeetikett mit handschriftl. Bezeichnung in schwarzer Feder "J. D. Rockefeller New York".
