    Apr. 11, 2021

    Sharon Kopriva (American/Texas, b. 1948), "Untitled - Twins"

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Sharon Kopriva (American/Texas, b. 1948) "Untitled - Twins" papier-mache, bone and mixed media sculpture h. 26", w. 13", d. 10" Provenance: Estate of Carol A. Straus, Houston, Texas. Literature: Sharon Kopriva: Sculptures and Paintings, Houston, W. A. Graham Gallery, 1989. Notes: Inspired by a 1982 trip to Peru, where she toured the Nazca graveyards and saw the sun-dried mummies with their bleached bones, papery skin and preserved hair, Kopriva embarked on a series of figural, often skeletal or desiccated, sculptures, vaguely religious in tone, composed of papier-mache, weathered bone and dark-dyed fabric. These figures, often nestled in cocoons equally reminiscent of the womb and the grave, are rendered in muddy sepia tones suggestive of burial under the dark earth or years spent resting in a dank catacomb. Explorations of life, death, spirituality and the dichotomy of permanence and impermanence, these works inevitably invoke an immediate visceral reaction from the viewer, as is evident with the sculpture offered here of two small skeletal figures encased together in seeming eternity.

    Sharon Kopriva (American/Texas, b. 1948)

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Sharon Kopriva (American/Texas, b. 1948), "Sister Theresa", 2001, papier-mâché, eye glasses, shoes, and mixed media, h. 52 in., w. 16 in., d. 15 in.. Provenance: Property of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund. Note: Houston-based artist Sharon Kopriva’s figural sculptures are highly influenced by her Catholic upbringing, “I was educated in Catholic school before the Second Vatican Council. Darkness, fear, penance—these are my earliest impressions.” In 2013, Susie Kalil writes of her experience visiting Kopriva’s exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Sothern Art, “[i]n whatever medium she uses, Kopriva’s rigorous process involves a slow accumulation of layers and the careful juxtaposition of elements,” she writes, “[t]o look at her work for an extended period of time is to watch macabre details lose their repulsive character and become almost exquisite.” Those ghoulish details are particularly evident in the sculpture presented here. Kopriva’s inspiration for her mummy-like depictions of religious figures can be traced back to when she visited Peru with her father. She was greatly touched by the various burial sites she visited, and as a Catholic, the visits solidified her interest in ritual imagery. Her depictions of religious figures have an undeniably morbid quality that evokes spiritual significance on par with the famous incorruptible saints. Jul. 16, 2009

SHARON KOPRIVA (American, b. 1948) Contemplation,

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

SHARON KOPRIVA (American, b. 1948) Contemplation, circa 1984 Mixed media on paper 27-3/4 x 21-1/4 inches (70.5 x 54.0 cm) Signed lower left: Kopriva Signed and titled verso: Kopriva / "Contemplation" PROVENANCE: Gerald Peters Gallery, Dallas (label verso). Houston artist Sharon Kopriva has gained accolades and provoked strong reactions throughout the world for her paintings and sculptures, which exhibit the influences of her Catholic background and a trip to Peru in 1981. These experiences, cultural, political, and religious, have contributed much to the development of her iconic and often humorous images of expressionistic mummy-like figures. Studying with New York painter John Alexander, as well as Texas sculptor James Surls, Kopriva is one of those rare artists who are equally comfortable producing paintings, sculpture, and prints. Her work has been shown in a solo exhibition at the Menil Collection, Houston, a major group exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum, Washington, D.C., and numerous group exhibitions in Asia, Europe, and North and South America. Figure in Waiting (1984) and Contemplation (1984) are ostensibly dark in subject matter, which stands in contrast to the brilliantly expressionistic use of color and line. Like many of her works, these images confront the viewer with superbly rendered images of death, but the subject is life. The cocoons that hold the skeletons resemble a human egg, or womb, and the lizards, a common symbol of male sexuality in cultures around the world, swim around them like sperm. The titles imply that these skeletons will soon be thrust back into the world once again-animated by the life forces that gather around them. An explicit representation of the life cycle, it forces the viewer to confront the utter necessity of death in order for life to be created again. As an artist, Kopriva celebrates life on the most fundamental level, in its relationship to death. Through her work, she tries to help the viewer confront their fears and understand their own mortality. In these two paintings, Kopriva has shown a willingness to address some of the most disturbing and elemental aspects of the human condition without having to sacrifice her inherent talent for making exquisite art-it is this ability that has made her such a compelling and successful artist.
