Kornberger absolvierte bis 1956 ein Studium der Malerei bei Robin Christian Andersen an der Akademie in Wien. Seit den 1960er Jahren setzte er sich nicht nur mit dem Kubismus und Surrealismus Picassos und Braques auseinander, sondern näherte sich auch der surrealistisch anmutenden, metaphysischen Malerei eines Giorgio de Chirico an. Abstrakte Tendenzen hinterließen hierbei aber nur kurzweilig ihre Spuren in seinem Werk.
