      Est: €80,000 - €120,000

(Vienna 1864–1905) A Market Scene in Cairo, signed Franz Kosler, oil on canvas, 90.5 x 132 cm, framed Provenance: Private Collection, Austria, for two generations. In 1884, after graduating from the General School of Painting, Franz Xaver Kosler was accepted at the Special School of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of the well-known Oriental painter Leopold Carl Müller. This admission was a great honour for the young artist, for Leopold Carl Müller was known to be an extremely selective professor who only admitted 37 students in his 14 years as head of school. However, Kosler had to interrupt his studies shortly after beginning his training in order to support his family financially. In the following years, he devoted himself mainly to portrait painting and to earning a living as a freelance artist. His first trip to Cairo was in 1892 to execute a portrait commission from Archbishop Porphyrini of Sina. It is unclear who arranged this commission and thus made the journey possible for Kosler, but it is likely that Leopold Carl Müller was a major supporter. From then on Kosler devoted himself almost exclusively to Oriental painting. He travelled to Egypt almost every year during the winter months and made a name for himself as an artist. He received portrait commissions, among them from Prince Said Pasha Halim, grandson of Mohammed Ali and future Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. His patrons also included Archduke Ferdinand Karl and Countess Palffy-Schlippenbach. As a result of his annual trips to Egypt, he produced studies and scenes of everyday Egyptian life, most of which were sent directly to London to be sold to collectors there. Kosler was not only highly regarded in Cairo, but also exhibited at the Vienna Kunsthalle, the Glaspalast in Munich and the Royal Academy in London. The present lot depicts a lively, sunny market scene at the edge of Cairo's old town, with the dome of the Sultaniyya Mausoleum stretching into the background. In the middle of the bustling marketplace sits a melon seller to whom a customer holds out coins in his hand. Behind him, two men pause to check the transaction and, if necessary, to assist the kneeling gentleman, who appears to be blind. To the right, a boy squats on the ground with clay pots while behind him a man leads loaded donkey through the crowd. The heat of the sun can almost be felt and seen in the shimmering air and in the deep shadows of the robes. Franz Xaver Kosler's skills as a draughtsman, colourist and also as a sensitive portraitist are clearly evident in this large-scale of work. This genre painting from a private Austrian collection is a rediscovery and joins the ranks of other compositional masterpieces in the artist's oeuvre, such as the "Vegetable Vendor in Cairo" (Christie's, London, 20 June 2002), "the Jugglers" (formerly in the Najd Collection), and "Merchants at a Market" (Christie's, London, 9 July 2009, lot 33).

      Est: £12,000 - £18,000

Franz Xavier Kosler (Austrian, 1864-1905) Head of a young Egyptian signed 'F. Kosler' (incised, lower right)oil on panel36 x 21cm (14 3/16 x 8 1/4in). Franz Xavier Kosler, born in Vienna in 1864, was one of the most celebrated Orientalist painters of his generation. Kosler began his artistic studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (The Academy of Fine Arts) in Vienna, studying under the renowned Austrian Orientalist artist Leopold Carl Müller. Highly influenced by Müller's work, Kosler went on to follow in his tutor's footsteps, travelling abroad to paint the Near East first hand. His richly coloured genre scenes and tender close-up portraits of young sitters dressed in traditional clothing, echo the work of his mentor. Setting off in 1886, Kosler travelled to Dalmatia, Montenegro, Albania and Egypt. Kosler returned to Egypt on several occasions, holding an exhibition there in 1894. The show was a great success and secured Kosler many wealthy Egyptian patrons, including Prince Said Halim Pasha, the grandson of Mehemet Ali Pasha, the future Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, who commissioned a series of portraits from the artist. Kosler's portrait commissions were not limited to Egyptian society. He also painted the Archduke Ferdinand Karl in Vienna and other wealthy individuals, such as Countess Palfy-Schilippenback, who sat for the artist in 1896. Whilst in Egypt Kosler made acquaintances with a number of influential European art collectors. These connections encouraged him to exhibit at the Glass Palace in Munich in 1899 and at the Royal Academy in London, where he exhibited The Blind Beggar and Vegetable Sellers, Cairo in 1903. Kosler also found fame in his home country, regularly exhibiting in the Viennese salons from 1895, and becoming a member of the Society of Artist Painters in 1901.Kosler is best known for his intricately detailed works such as Camel Market in Cairo (1889, Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum collection in Linz); however his more delicate and intimate portraits also display an ability to capture emotion. In the present lot, Kosler draws his subject close to show just the head and shoulders of his sitter, a technique which the artist uses to great effect in works such as Nada, jeune Beduin, Sinai (sold in these rooms, 10 July 2013) and A young Arab (Bonhams, New York, 6 November 2013).

Oil painting "North African" attributed to F.X. Kosler, 19th C

      Est: €800 - €1,000

Oil on canvas, mounted on canvas Austria, late 19th Century Attributed to Franz Xaver Kosler (1864-1905) - Austrian orientalist and portrait painter Orientalist portraits by Franz Xaver Kosler fetch up to 52,000 Euros at international auctions Intertwined monogram lower left Frame with four gold and white patera in all four corners Overall dimensions, framed: 63 x 50.5 cm Good condition This unique portrait reveals the genius of its creator in every brush stroke. The North African man is portrayed from a very short yet respectful, observing distance. The impressive profile of the man, which is even prolonged through the boldly protruding beard, is highlighted through skillfully placed light reflexes. His long nose and high forehead are being illuminated and thus become an eye catcher for the viewer. The thick black area of the man's hair acts as a counterweight to the lighter areas and directs the viewer back to them. The white cloth in which the man is wrapped is so subtly rendered that it also does not draw any attention from the face. The background's grey-turquoise colour harmonises with the dark skin and is not at all distracting, appearing to be quiet but not still. The portrait is an outstanding, well-balanced composition and the melancholic look of the African attracts every beholder's view again and again. The painting clearly resembles those by Franz Xaver Kosler in its painting style, the exact observation and the realistic and soft colouring are very similar to these. As the entwined monogram is not a known signature by Kosler, our expert chose to only attribute the portrait to this fine Orientalist. The painting is in good condition, with few surface scratches and minor touch ups. The beautiful period frame with the exceptional four gold and white patera is in good condition with age-related traces of wear. The original canvas has been mounted to another canvas underneath. The painting is signed in the lower left with a monogram consisting of intertwined letters. The overall dimensions, framed, are 63 x 50.5 cm; the dimensions of the canvas are 52 x 40 cm. Franz Xaver Kosler (1864-1905) Kosler was born in Vienna and studied at the local academy as a pupil of Leopold Carl Müller. After his studies, he travelled to Spain, Montenegro and repeatedly to Egypt. He had several exhibitions in Kairo that made him known to a wider audience and helped him receive many more orders. Today, most of his paintings can be found in private collections primarily in England.

Oil painting „North African" attributed to F.X. Kosler, 19th C

      Est: €4,000 - €5,000
