      Jun. 06, 2024

      PRAVOSLAV KOTÍK 1889 - 1970 - BATHING

      Est: -

The work Bathing comes from his early work just after the artist's first exhibition with the group Divocí and also from the time when he was taking the exam at the Academy of Fine Arts. The central theme, as in all his work, is man - his role, his place in the world, his emotional state of mind. Bathing, rendered in the spirit of the French avant-garde, is an intimate, introspective subject, which, despite its relatively early date, is on a par with works from later trips to Paris, and captivates especially with its neoclassical view of the world and its social thematic line. Technique: oil on cardboard, Signed: sign. lower left: P. Kotík 1912

      Dec. 07, 2023

      PRAVOSLAV KOTÍK 1889 - 1970 - A COMPOSITION

      Est: -

Kotík studied at UMPRUM and AVU in Prague, and in the course of the 1920s he became a member of important artistic societies; Association of visual artists Mánes and Art Talk. Here he met the artists K. Holán, M. Holý and K. Kotrba, with whom he founded the HoHoKoKo Social Group in 1924, which focused on realistic subjects and social themes. Kotík's work oscillates from expressionism and fauvism to neoclassical works. The composition is applied by impulsive layering of color, and the key building blocks are gesture, movement and sharp contrast. Technique: oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: sign. lower right: P Kotík 62

Many layers can be found in Kotík's work; from Expressionism and Fauvism in early works, Cubism and Neoclassicism from the 1920s, to a touch of Surrealism in the 1950s. In the 1960s, all these tendencies crystallized into unrestrained abstraction with a distinctly Fauvist color palette. He enjoys applying thick pasty tones and hard black contours. Jun. 08, 2023

PRAVOSLAV KOTÍK 1889 - 1970 - PICNIC ON THE GRASS

      Est: -

Picnic on the Grass is a representative example of the author's highly collectible period, when the influence of cubism was reflected in the artist's work after his study trips to Paris. Kotík's paraphrase of Édouard Manet's famous composition of a graceful sculptural female nude uses an attractive turquoise tone in the background, evoking bathing motifs and environmental elements he knew and saw well. In 1924, together they founded the HoHoKoKo Social Group, which focused on realistic themes and social issues. Many layers can be found in Kotík's work; from Expressionism and Fauvism in early works, Cubism and Neoclassicism from the 1920s, to a touch of Surrealism in the 1950s. In his paintings, he plays out the stories of lovers in cafes, refined country people, or people clarifying their existence in the face of modern civilization. Dec. 08, 2022

      PRAVOSLAV KOTÍK 1889 - 1970 - BY THE WATER

      Est: -

From the opinion of PhDr. Rea Michalová Ph.D.: "The assessed painting "By the water" is an indisputable authorship, visually extraordinarily attractive, superbly played out in form and color by Pravoslav Kotík, a prominent representative of Czech modernism, an artist who was not subject to theoretical dogmas and had the courage to experiment artistically. The center of gravity however, his work became primarily a figural theme, i.e. a person in a complex social structure, reflecting his multi-layered story. Kotík was an author fascinated by the expression of human gesture, events and color contrasts in the painting. As Ludmila Vachtová accurately described: "At the beginning of these paintings, in addition to all the advantages, which we know about in Kotík (colorful organization of space, sense of large composition, bravura of detail), was movement. However, the focus of his work was mainly figural themes, i.e. a person in a complex social structure, reflecting his multi-layered story. Kotík was an author fascinated by expression human gesture, action, and color contrasts in the image. The featured image " By the water" is Kotík's beautiful work, exquisitely connected in form and color, which was able to literally brilliantly shine through the gloom of the wartime era. The atmosphere of the historical conflict gave the author's works a scenic and dramatic quality, the painter's paintings became a kind of concentrates of accumulated emotions." Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Upper right „P. Kotík 42“

      Dec. 14, 2021

      PRAVOSLAV KOTÍK 1889 - 1970 - LOVERS

      Est: -

The painting Lovers by the painter Pravoslav Kotík is a representative example of the author's prized period, when the influence of Cubism after his study trips to Paris was reflected in the artist's work. Lovers in a passionate embrace carry reflections of Picasso's artistic morphology and combine it with natural color tones. The landscape of the bedroom completely gives way to transcendental love ecstasy and is only indicated in a few lines, which outline the space of events, but evoke vegetation in the meadow rather than the interior. Many layers can be found in Kotík’s oeuvre, from Expressionism and Fauvism in his early work and Cubism and Neoclassicism in the Twenties to touches of Surrealism in the Fifties. His paintings unfurl stories of lovers in cafés, toiling villagers, and people coming to terms their existence in the face of modern civilization. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Lower left "P. PRAVOSLAV KOTÍK 1889 - 1970 - A GREEN FIGURE

      Est: -

Figures in the spirit of cubist shape reduction and fauvist color scale represent a typical form of expression of Pravoslav Kotík. Kotík studied at both the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the 1920s and joined the country’s major art associations – Mánes Union of Fine Artists and Umělecká Beseda. It was here where he met artists Karel Holan, Miloslav Holý and Karel Kotrba, who in 1924 co-founded Ho-Ho-Ko-Ko Social Group focused on realistic subjects and social themes. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "P. Est: -

Modern city life against the background of historical architecture - in contrast to the old and modern, as well as man and woman, this is exactly what Kotík is interested in, as well as many of his generational companions. The emotional moment processed in an ingenious acronym offers a view of the meeting of two close individuals. Many layers can be found in Kotík's work; from expressionism and fauvism in the early works, cubism and neoclassicism in the 1920s, to a touch of surrealism in the 1950s. In his paintings, he tells the stories of lovers in cafés, sophisticated peasants, or people clarifying their existence in the face of modern civilization. Paar im Theater Öl auf Leinwand. 1929. 28 x 46 cm. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

      GIRL BEHIND THE BALL

      Est: -

Pravoslav Kotík reduces a running female figure to sharp, angular forms precisely following the principles of Cubism. The young woman is quickly moving forward, her hands over her head, along the trajectory of the ball, which moves diagonally and almost disappears from the painting. In addition to sharp geometry, Kotík also added a wild Fauvist color scale to emphasize the kinetics of the running figure. Kotík studied at both the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the 1920s and joined the country’s major art associations – Mánes Union of Fine Artists and Umělecká Beseda. It was here where he met artists Karel Holan, Miloslav Holý and Karel Kotrba, who in 1924 co-founded Ho Ho Ko Ko Social Group focused on realistic subjects and social themes. His art was markedly influenced by Cubism, which significantly reduced his structures. Kotík's lifelong theme was man in the context of the social environment.

      TWO SEATED YOUNG WOMAN

      Est: -

This female nude of two seated young women is a provocative painting by Pravoslav Kotík from a period when his work was strongly influenced by Cubism. Kotík very much enjoyed painting female nudes, especially in the early 1930s, when his work shows elements of Neoclassicism. Young women with bold curves sit provocatively among colored pillows sketched with black contours and placed in the center of the composition. The theme reflects the relaxed and liberal atmosphere of the interwar period.
