Howard Kottler (American, 1930-1989) Sculptural Vessel, USA, circa 1967-68 Polychrome and luster-glazed ceramic Incised signature: "KOTTLER" (H: 18 1/2, W: 17 5/8, D: 7 3/8 in.) Qty: (1) Provenance Acquired directly from the artist Property from the Robert L. Pfannebecker Collection Literature Garth Clark, Ceramic Art: Comment and Review, 1882-1977, E.P. Dutton, New York, 1978, pp. 170, 173 (for a discussion of the artist) Lee Nordness, Objects: USA, The Viking Press, New York, 1970, p. 117 (for a discussion of the artist and illustration of a related form) Artist Biography Born in Cleveland in 1930, Howard Kottler earned an M.A. (1956) and Ph.D. (1964) in Ceramics from Ohio State University and an M.F.A. (1957) under Maija Grotell at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1957, he was awarded a Fulbright grant to Finland, where he worked at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Arabia Ceramics Factory in Helsinki, and collaborated with acclaimed Finnish potter, Kyllikki Salmenhaara. A ceramicist and influential educator, Kottler joined the faculty of the University of Washington in 1964, a position he held until 1989. Drawing from far-reaching sources—including Dada, Cubism, Art Deco, Pop, and the Bay Area Funk Art movement—Kottler eschewed traditional studio processes and handicraft in favor of mass-produced and “readymade” objects, most notably decal plates. His work frequently engaged with contemporary social and political topics, and reflected personal and popular ideas about sex, religion, and civil rights. The recipient of numerous one-person and retrospective exhibitions, Kottler is featured in the collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art; the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the London’s Victoria and Albert Museum; and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, among others. Very good; no breaks or repairs noted; light overall crazing.

Howard William Kottler (American, 1930-1989). "Gold Angel Pot" earthenware and metal leafs, ca. 1980s. A wonderful example of Howard Kottler's whimsical creativity, "Gold Angel Pot" presents a voluminous body enveloped in copper leaf with a trio of sinuous silvered motifs adorning each side, framed by golden wings. Kottler embraced the wild explorations of the California Funk new movement which rejected traditional art theories and granted freedoms to employ satiric commentary on American popular culture. His art is oftentimes humorous and drew upon various influences such as Art Deco, Pop Art, Dada, and Cubism. Size: 9.375" L x 17.375" W x 16.75" H (23.8 cm x 44.1 cm x 42.5 cm) Howard Kottler earned a BA in biological sciences (1952), an MA in ceramics (1956), and a PhD in ceramics (1964) at Ohio State University. In addition, he earned and MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art (1957) where he studied with Maija Grotell. He also received a Fulbright to study in Finland that same year. In 1964, Kottler moved to Seattle, Washington to teach at the University of Washington and was exposed to the California funk movement.
