Kowanz 84/85' Dimensions: 82 x 82 cm Good condition Provenance: from an Austrian private collection A rare piece from the 1980s, a period when Brigitte Kowanz artistically dealt with the cosmos; an extraordinary spectacle when seen in the dark because of the fluorescent paint! This painting was created by one of the internationally most renowned contemporary artists from Austria, Brigitte Kowanz. A light blue compass needle is painted on a light green background. The canvas is surrounded by a serrated wooden frame with partial applications of red paint. Brigitte Kowanz is primarily known for her minimalistic light installations. The present piece is a rare example of one of her paintings. The ephemeral visibility of the light is captured here in the paint and made permanent, in the same purist and technical clarity as her light installations. It shows Kowanz's distinctive minimalism in a deviation from the norm, highlighted by the slant of the stretcher frame. The painting is signed and dated on verso - on the stretcher and twice on the canvas 'B. Kowanz 84/85'. The condition of the work is good with slight traces of wear. The dimensions are 82 x 82 cm. Brigitte Kowanz (born 1957) Awarded with the Great Austrian State Prize, Brigitte Kowanz ranks amongst the internationally most renowned contemporary artists of the country. From 1975 to 1980, she studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Since 1997, she has held a professorship at the same university. Subject of her art is light, the natural ubiquitous visibility generator, which illuminates objects but can be easily overlooked. In her works, she visualises the physical quality of light. She has taken part in a number of international group exhibitions and realised several architectural projects. Works by Brigitte Kowanz are in the collections of major international art museums and galleries, for example the Belvedere in Vienna, as well as in private collections.
