    • Barbara Krafft, 'Portrait of a Lady from Salzburg', 1822
      Nov. 29, 2013

Barbara Krafft, 'Portrait of a Lady from Salzburg', 1822

      Est: €3,200 - €4,000

Oil on canvas Austria, 1822 Barbara Krafft, born Steiner (1764-1825) - Austrian portrait painter At the right side signed and dated 'Barbara Krafft nata Steiner pinxit 1822' Verso the inscription is repeated by another hand Overall dimensions, framed: 71 x 63 cm; stretcher frame: 62.5 x 55 cm Good condition Provenance: German private collection Barbara Krafft was one of the most sought after portrait painters of her time; today her portraits fetch more than 27,000 Euro at international auctions Barbara Krafft (1764-1825) painted this portrait of a bourgeois lady from Salzburg in 1822. The high-quality portrait belongs to her late oeuvre, being a typical work by the artist, who primarily painted portraits. Krafft's great talent becomes evident in the realistic and expressive depiction of the lady. The vivid flesh tones, the bright eyes, the delicately painted floral bonnet and the fine hand, adorned with two golden rings, are artistically hard to surpass. Barbara Krafft was one of the most sought after portrait painters of her time. The painting is signed and dated 'Barbara Krafft nata Steiner pinxit 1822' to the right of the image, verso these inscriptions are repeated by another hand. It is in good condition, showing usual signs of age. The canvas is relined and the paint surface shows extensive craquelure and colour flaking along the edges. The silver coloured wood frame is in good condition, featuring only some small chips. The overall dimensions with frame are 71 x 63 cm, the stretcher frame measuring 62.5 x 55 cm. Barbara Krafft (1764-1825) Barbara Krafft was the daughter of the Austrian Imperial court painter Johann Nepomuk Steiner. She received painting lessons from her father and moved with him to Vienna, where she began exhibiting her works in the 1780s. She soon became a member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and achieved success as a portrait painter. After some years in Vienna, she first went to Salzburg, then to Prague and back to Salzburg. She spent her last years in Bamberg. Stylistically, Barbara Krafft adheres to classicism and the so-called 'sensibility'. She was one of the most sought after portrait painters of her time. Her best-known portrait is that of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from 1819. It is today the most reproduced portrait of Mozart. Besides portraits, Krafft created altar and genre scenes, influenced by the Dutch artist Gerrit van Honthorst.
