Gloucester, Bristol, 1912, pp. 15, no. 5.Charles XII (1682 - 1718) was King of Sweden (including current Finland) from 1697 to 1718. He belonged to the House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, a branch line of the House of Wittelsbach. Charles was the only surviving son of Charles XI and Ulrika Eleonora the Elder. He assumed power, after a seven-month caretaker government, at the age of fifteen. Charles is depicted in the same blue and yellow uniform of the Swedish Imperial Guard throughout many official portraits, this is now in the Royal Armoury in Stockholm.It is not known why the present picture was in the Crawley-Boevey collection at Flaxley. Other versions of this portrait are in the Government Art Collection, London and the National Trust Collection, Plas Newydd, Anglesey. .
