Anatole Krasnyansky Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1930 -

It was while working on a set design for ABC Studios that artist Anatole Krasnyansky experienced the culture shock that pushed his work into the realm of surrealism. Having moved from Kiev, Ukraine, to the United States, he wasn't prepared for the painted faces, extreme costumes, and frenetic performances of the iconic rock band Kiss. Finding his background in traditional art insufficient to fully express his emotional reaction to the group, he turned to a surreal style which utilized a shadow perception of mask-wearing subjects conveying the human tendency to hide behind facades.

The earlier style of Anatole Krasnyansky's art and prints for sale leaned toward cityscapes, reflecting his educational background in architecture. Working with watercolors, he used texture and color to link culture and buildings. Artist Anatole Krasnyansky's later work merges both unique architectures with surrealist figurals. View vintage, iconic cityscape prints at auction and bring home your favorite scene.

Anatole Krasnyansky (1930-2023) Ukrainian/American, Color Serigraph

    Est: $400 - $800

Anatole Krasnyansky (1930-2023) Ukrainian/American, Color Serigraph. A vibrant, surreal, abstract set of figures with instruments. Signed in pen bottom left. Numbered 348/350 in pen bottom right. Certificate of Authenticity from Park West Gallery attached to back, including title "Duet" and date 2000. Overall Size: 39 1/2 x 44 in.  Sight Size: 26 1/2 x 31 in.  #6476 .    Anatole Krasnyansky was born in Kyiv, Ukraine on April 26th, 1930. His father passed away from leukemia before he turned one, and the family struggled to make ends meet throughout his childhood. Before he was ten they had to flee to Stalingrad to escape the invading Nazis, and then relocated to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. To distract himself from all their difficulties, he became a voracious reader and consumed information like a sponge, gradually developing an interest in art. He returned to Ukraine in 1947 and studied at the Kyiv State Art Institute, then attended the Leningrad Academy of Art where he received his masters in architecture in 1953. Krasnyansky was invited to work on the restorations of important national buildings, including the Potemkin Palace, the Marble Palace, and the Hermitage Museum. In Ukraine he designed the Central Medical Emergency Building and the Polytechnic Institute Subway Station, as well as hospitals, art pavilions, exhibition installations, and monuments. Krasnyansky married Nelly Koshevatsky in 1957, with whom he had a daughter. She encouraged him to return to his first love, art, and he began to experiment with multiple mediums and forms, creating sculptures, mixed media, and watercolor paintings. He gained international prominence for pioneering a new technique that introduced unusual paper textures into the watercolors, creating a depth and clarity usually associated with oils. This attention, however, led to his loyalty being questioned by the KGB, and in 1975 his family escaped the U.S.S.R. and fled to the United States with little more than the brushes he had hidden in his boots. Krasnyansky quickly became a background artist and set designer for major television and movie studios, including ABC, CBS, and Universal Studios. This newfound freedom finally allowed him to pursue fine art as a career, and he became known for his juxtapositions in his works, balancing old and new techniques, as well as structuralism and surrealism. He spent many years as the Stage Art Director for the Odyssey Theatre, and gave lectures at Stanford University and UCLA, as well as several art and lecture tours in Japan. He regularly exhibited at and was represented by Park West Gallery, and raised funds for relief efforts back in Europe throughout his life, collaborating frequently with the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, his adopted home. In the early 2000s he re-engaged with his architectural past and helped design a new facade of Park West’s headquarters in Michigan. His art was the centerpiece of a 2022 auction that raised over $500,000 in support of Ukrainian relief efforts against the Russian invasion. Krasnyansky passed away on March 10th, 2023, and his work can be found in public, private, and corporate collections all over the world.
