      Large oil on canvas of a dramatic coastal landscape by Franz Krause. He was born in Berlin and specialized in landscape and maritime paintings, and exhibited in Berlin in the 1870's. His favorite subjects were rocky beaches and coastlines, as well as English and Dutch themes related to nature. The painting is similar to another Krause painting which sold at Christie's, London, in 2011. That painting was done below a castle on the Isle of Man, and the painting here may well have been done off the coast of Wales; Krause died in Wales. Signed "F Krause 1872" in the lower right. Rebacked with panel board. The overall size s 28 1/4 x 42 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 21 1/2 x 35 1/2 in. wide.

Sagert & Co., Berlin Dimensions: 55 x 81 cm Stucco frame: 68.5 x 95 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia Naturalistic landscape with mill and mountains in the background and staffage,whi is focused by the light – a thunderstorm seems to be approaching. Condition: The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. The varnish is darkened and tiny craquelé can be seen overall on the canvas. There are areas with very little scuffing due to the frame along the upper edges and corners of the canvas and scattered marks can be seen. There are two tiny holes in the middle of the lower edge. The painting has been skillfully repaired. Several retouched spots can be seen on the canvas.The frame is in good condition with traces of usage. The dimensions are 55 x 81 cm and the frame measures 68.5 x 95 cm. Franz Emil Krause (c. 1836-1900) Franz Emil Krause was born in Berlin. He specialized in landscape and marine painting and started to exhibit at the Berlin academy exhibitions in 1879. His favorite subjects were landscapes in Schleswig, rocky beaches and coastlines as well as English and Dutch impressions of nature. Krause died at the age of about 64 in Cornway, Wales.
