      HANS KREBS

      Est: $300 - $400

      (1898 – 1945) German general of infantry who served in the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht. He served as the last Chief of Staff of the OKH during the final phase of the war and tried to open surrender negotiations with the Red Army; he committed suicide in the Führerbunker during the early hours of 2 May 1945. Fine association war-date T.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p.], Nov. 25, 1943 to RUDOLF-CHRISTOFF FREIHERR VON GERSDORFF (1905–1980) German army officer and Knights Cross recipient who attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler by suicide bombing on 21 March 1943 but failed when Hitler left before the bombs could be detonated. Krebs thanks his friend for his long letter and congratulates him for an award he has received. He states that he has been pleased to work with Gersdorff, and would happily do so again if "...the military road brings us together again..." and further instructs that Gersdorff is not to return back to service under Krebs until doctors certify him as completely recovered. Lightly toned, else fine.

Krebs sets forth his name, rank, and SS number above the printed statement: "I am German, I am of Aryan heritage, I do not belong to any Freemason lodge or any other secret organization and I have never belonged to them before. Rare T.L.S. on Czech-occupation letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Sep. 4, 1942 to Albert Bormann in Berlin. Birthday wishes: "...May you be granted long years of service and activity for the Fuhrer and the German State, and especially after the victories of the Fuhrer and his soldiers, to participate in the building of Greater Germany, thus the heartland of a new Europe...".       HANS KREBS (1898 - 1945) German general of infantry. Krebs became part of a military tribunal ordered by Hitler to court-martial Hermann Fegelein. Fegelein, by that time was Eva Braun's brother-in-law. SS-General Wilhelm Mohnke presided over the tribunal but Fegelein was so drunk that he was determined to be in no condition to stand trial. Mohnke closed the proceedings and Fegelein was turned over for execution. On 29 April, 1945 Krebs, Burgdorf, Goebbels, and Bormann witnessed and signed the last will and testament of Adolf Hitler. Krebs also delivered German surrender proposals to Russian Gen. Chuikov. Rare T.L.S. on Czech-occupation letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Sep. 4, 1942 to Martin Bormann in Berlin. Birthday wishes: "...May you be granted long years of service and activity for the Fuhrer and the German State, and especially after the victories of the Fuhrer and his soldiers, to participate in the building of Greater Germany, thus the heartland of a new Europe...".
