Cornelius Krieghoff Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Genre Painter, Porträtmaler, b. 1812 - d. 1872

Dutch artist Cornelius Kreighoff (b.1815) immigrated to North America when he was 22. The indigenous people of America and Canada were often the subject of Cornelius Keighoff's paintings, and they included details of rural landscapes and traditional attire. By 1846, Cornelius Kreighoff's paintings were in demand and he had established himself as an artist in Canada.

Cornelius Kreighoff's prints are renderings of his meticulous oil paintings of racing sleds, hunting, fishing, and deep woods landscapes. Kreighoff did receive some criticism for his depictions of the natives being generic, but his love of indigenous culture and their bond with the land shows in his pieces. Cornelius Kreighoff's artworks for sale are an example of historical contemporary art and offer a glimpse into American and French-Canadian Indian life in the 1800s. CORNELIUS DAVID KRIEGHOFF (1815 - 1872) An Indian Hunter in the snow Oil on canvas, 28.5 x 23.5cm Signed 'C. Krieghoff, Quebec' Cornelius David Krieghoff, a 19th Century Dutch-born Canadian-American painter is most famous for his paintings of Canadian life and landscapes and is particularly renowned for his winter scenes, some of which he painted in a number of variants. Born in Amsterdam in June 1815, he moved to New York at the age of 21 and duly enlisted in the US Army. After his discharge in 1840 he travelled to Paris and studied under Michel Martin Drolling who encouraged him to copy the masterpieces at the Louvre. With his wife Émilie, he returned to North America and settled in Montreal where he participated in the Montreal Society of Artists. While there he developed friendships with members of the Mohawk people living on the Kahnawake Indian Reservation, producing sketches of them which he would later work up into paintings. After short periods living in Quebec, and in Europe, he retired to Chicago where he died in 1872 at the age of 56. According to Charles Hill, the Canadian art curator and writer, “Krieghoff was the first Canadian artist to interpret in oils ... the splendour of our waterfalls, and the hardships and daily life of people living on the edge of new frontiers”. The present work is one of a series of similar paintings of Indian hunters, which includes Following The Moose which is in the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

Collection Officer of the Quebec Garrison  By descent to Private Collection, Edinburgh  William Watson Gallery, Montreal  Fraser Bros. Ltd., Montreal, 1966, Lot 851 Private Collection, Montreal  By descent to Private Collection, Calgary A rare opportunity, this beautifully preserved painting has not been seen publicly since 1966, when it was bought at auction in Montreal. After Cornelius Krieghoff completed the piece, it was brought to England by members of the Québec Garrison, where it made its way to Scotland. Against the backdrop of Krieghoff’s signature candy-floss clouds, we see a fur cache built into the side of a hillock. From behind a door flap made from a Hudson’s Bay blanket, a figure emerges, curious to see the two figures conversing outside the shelter. In the background, a trapper strains to pull a well-loaded toboggan through the snow, returning from a hard day’s work. A similar painting is held in the permanent collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Indian Hunter and His Family, completed in 1856. Indian Hunter and His Family, completed in 1856. CORNELIUS KRIEGHOFF GOING TO THE VILLAGE oil on canvas signed and inscribed "Quebec", framed as an oval sight 12 ins x 17 ins; 30.5 cms x 43.2 cms Provenance: Watson Art Galleries, Montreal Private Collection, Toronto The title of this piece is Going to the Village, but it appears to be more of a race than an idle jaunt into town. The driver on the left is tensed with the anticipation of catching the other sled, his face caught in a grimace of determination. Though he is behind, he has the advantage of the inside track. The driver on the right urges his horse on, while his fellow riders look back eagerly. The three of them are anxious not to relinquish the lead. There is room on the road for the two sleds to ride abreast, and the ultimate winner has not yet been determined. Cornelius Krieghoff has a wonderful way with light: we can see the sun setting on a short winter day, the shadows just beginning to creep in. The frosty twilight on snowy fields and the looming distant hills provide a vivid backdrop for the dramatic scene. We can feel the chill, the exhilaration. Our racers charge on, eager to be the first to the village. Estimate: $40,000–60,000

Cornelius David Krieghoff (Canadian, 1812-1872) , "Basket Seller", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 11 in. x 9 in., framed . Provenance: Oscar Pratt Benson, Benson Art Store, Buffalo, NY; thence by descent in the family.Germany, France, the United States and Canada. During his time living in Montreal and Quebec City, Krieghoff became particularly interested in painting breathtaking views of the Canadian landscape, as well as scenes of Native Americans in the nearby regions. The painting offered here depicts a woman traveling through the autumnal landscape to sell baskets. A similar painting titled “Moccasin Seller Crossing the St. Lawrence at Quebec City,” in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, portrays a woman smoking a pipe and carrying many pairs of moccasins as she snowshoes through the icy landscape. The work offered here descended in the family of Oscar Pratt Benson (1848-1934). Benson was born in New York and married his wife, Mary Alma Short, in her native Lindsay, Ontario before the couple settled in Buffalo. Benson worked as a store clerk, eventually turning to making frames and selling artwork. Through the 1890s and early 1900s, he owned Benson Art Store located at 564 Main Street in Buffalo.

As Dennis Reid reminds us, at that time Quebec was a bustling city: "Almost as large as Montreal at a population of some 58,000, close to 40 per cent anglophone (as opposed to the then slightly more than 50 per cent anglophone component of the Montreal population) it was the military headquarters for British North America, the centre of the all-important timber trade with Britain, the location of the burgeoning new ship building industry and since October 1851, had been the seat of the government for the province of Canada, a position it would retain until the capital moved again to Toronto in 1855." According to Russell Harper, the decade or so Krieghoff spent in Quebec City were years of fulfillment for the artist and among his most productive. This lot, depicting a trepidacious winter crossing between Quebec City, whose citadel and ramparts are silhouetted in the distance, and Lévis on the opposite side of the mighty St. Lawrence River, dates to that happy and productive period. Harper writes:"Passengers between Quebec and Lévis on the other side of the St. Lawrence travelled during the winter months aboard special Royal Mail canoes. The boatmen or canotiers who operated these were a hardy breed who jumped out on the ice floes which impeded their progress and hauled the wooden canoes over the obstacles. Some passengers who gave them a hand received a reduction in their passage money. It was an adventurous trip for the uninitiated, and one of the experiences remembered by visitors to Quebec in the winter months." Our canoe bears the responsibility of safe passage for eleven people - including one woman, seated on a thick bear skin rug, and a black dog. It is fair to imagine that this is not their first crossing for none seems particularly alarmed by what appears to be an experience that could have an uncertain outcome. Marius Barbeau, Krieghoff's early biographer, lists six known versions of this subject as well as one print which was produced by Kell brothers, in 1860. At over 17 by 30 inches, this canvas would be the largest known version of the subject.Estimate: $225,000–275,000

This was a traditional step in an artist's training that was popular then and is still done today. As a result of the trip he made to Europe around 1845, we have a small number of works that survive. This work, A Visit to the Dentist, likely stems from that early period of artistic development. We know something of the artist's movements while overseas. He visited London to meet with his publishers, and carried on to Paris, were he copied works both in the Louvre and the Luxembourg. Yet, the precise source inspiration of this picture remains unknown. Perhaps it was not one single picture that he copied (as is the case for other early works that have surfaced) but a pastiche of inspirations, interpreted in an entirely novel way. Marius Barbeau, Russell Harper and Dennis Reid have each devoted space in their histories of the artist to this period in his production and the works that resulted. If we place A Visit to the Dentist in that early period of Kreighoff's art making, we may view it as a prototype for what would follow. Returning to Canada with sharpened skills, Krieghoff went on to paint the Canadianized versions of the genre scenes he saw in the European galleries. Typically, figures - or more accurately,  characters - are set within or upon a kind of stage that clearly indicates mood and setting, as this lot does. One thinks of the Officers Trophy Room (Royal Ontario Museum) and The Artist's Studio (National Gallery of Canada). The lessons of Europe are also evident here particularly in the way Kreighoff has understood and interpreted light, reflecting, as it were, the methods of the the great Dutch Masters to which he would have been exposed.Estimate: $10,000–15,000

Very few of these are known to exist. The format of these three works with their rounded upper corners suggests that they were perhaps mounted onto pages of a scrapbook. Such works were popular collectibles for visitors to Canada, including itinerant military personnel and, even, the wife of the Governor General (the Marchioness of Lorne) and daughter of Queen Victoria, Princess Louise, who owned a watercolour entitled Sleigh Riders in a Snowstorm. The National Gallery of Canada acquired two such works in 1995, depicting the St. Anne Falls, one of which is a view from above the falls similar to this lot, with a figure, or figures, dwarfed by the majestic landscape. Later Krieghoff would paint the falls of Niagara, Chaudière and Shawinigan (used as the back cover illustration to Reid’s 1999 catalogue Krieghoff: Images of Canada). Such awesome scenes of nature were in vogue mid-century, as were visits to the great cataracts themselves, and Krieghoff shrewdly responded to the demand. However, unlike other subjects which became “pot-boilers” – works churned out strictly for the quick and easy sales they generated - in the hands of Krieghoff, these falls subjects can be what Reid calls a “magnificent orchestration of natural effects”. Indeed, in this lot the artist has successfully struck the right note marrying the dramatic effects of the approaching storm with the undulating rock and racing water below.Estimate: $50,000–70,000

Winter River Scene. Cornelius David Krieghoff (1815-1872). Oil on Canvas. 16 x 20 inches canvas, 25 x 29 inches framed. It is a crisp, cold winter’s day in Canada. The lake has frozen over and two skaters enjoy the ice in the distance. In the foreground two men collect fire wood, one pulling the other across the ice on a sled. The artist has created a painting that is both atmospheric and idyllic, captivating and charming. Cornelius Krieghoff is Canada's most famous nineteenth-century artist. A prolific painter, Krieghoff created images that were eagerly collected in his own time and that have become familiar icons of an idealized past in the more than 125 years since his death. He painted Canada when the development of the country’s popular imagery was in its early stages. An entrepreneur, Krieghoff depicted a populist vision of the country's landscape and peoples, describing the customs and traditions of various Native peoples and the activities and character of the French-Canadian settler or habitant. Krieghoff was born in Amsterdam and emigrated to North America ca. 1835. At first, he settled in New York where he met his future wife, Émilie Gauthier. In 1840 they moved to Montreal and he began working as an artist. Krieghoff traveled to Paris in 1844 and copied masterworks at the Louvre under the direction of Michel-Martin Drölling. He returned to Montreal in 1846 and, after establishing a studio, began painting his views of people and activities. The artist and his family moved to Quebec City in 1853, where he painted city views and the surrounding region. He continued to exhibit his work and sell prints and photo-reproductions of his work while he lived in Europe (1863-1870). Krieghoff returned briefly to Quebec in 1871 before announcing a move to Chicago, where he died a few months later in 1872

In the early 1850s, he had met John Budden, a dealer/auctioneer who would become one of Krieghoff’s closest friends and through whom the artist was encouraged to move east.According to Barbeau, “No sooner had Krieghoff landed at Quebec with his family than Budden called out, ‘Now, my dear fellow, let’s go to Montmorency Falls’.” Barbeau continues: “Budden who had a flair for business took Krieghoff to Montmorency Falls and Indian Lorette in the late winter of 1853. There they would meet important Quebec people on their own favourite playgrounds.” Krieghoff painted the falls in all seasons and there are oils, watercolours and lithographs of this subject. However, Barbeau singles out Montmorency in Winter, an oversize watercolour that is very likely this lot, as “the largest and finest.” In his catalogue raisonné of the artist, Barbeau includes Montmorency Falls in Winter, an upright watercolour from the collection of W.P. Hickey, Esquire, exhibited at both the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Association of Montreal in 1934, describing it thus: “Falls in winter with ice cone. Pillars of fallen bridge at top. Smaller fall to the left. Observation stand near top to the left. A berline going towards foot of falls; two people in. Two groups of horses and people at the foot of the cone; someone with toboggan; two people on top of cone. Blue sky with clouds. The largest known water colour of Krieghoff; vigorous.”Estimate: $25,000–30,000

Borum of Munich under the patronage of Lord Elgin, then Governor of Canada. Jouvancourt explains that Krieghoff and Lord Elgin met while “the latter was passing through the village on a tour of inspection.” Seeing his work Elgin “was full of praise for this kind of painting describing the life of the people living in this corner of the province and was struck by the variety of subjects treated by the painter. Since lithography was then all the rage, Krieghoff explained that he intended to choose some of his most typical paintings and have engravings made of them. Lord Elgin thought this an excellent idea and offered his patronage... Later that year, coloured lithographs printed by Kammerer made their appearance...and were an immediate success.”Estimate: $10,000–15,000
