Leon Kroll Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Genre Painter, Wall painter, Lithographer, Porträtmaler, Landscape painter, Still life painter, b. 1884 - d. 1974

(b New York City, 1884; d 1974) American painter. Leon Kroll studied at both the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League and then at the Academie Julien in Paris, gaining exposure to the latest art trends and finding inspiration in the work of Cezanne and Renoir. Although the artist is known mostly for landscapes and figural paintings, Leon Kroll began his career painting cityscapes and industrial scenes. Both American and European artists of this period frequently depicted cityscapes in winter to alleviate the harsh and inhuman qualities of urban life. An early fascination with trains continued throughout Kroll's life, reflecting the current interest in the rapid developments in transportation. BIOGRAPHY: Leon Kroll remained a painter of realism at a time when the American art world was moving rapidly into abstraction and other styles that fell under the general term of modernism. Nevertheless, asserting that he liked easy-to-recognize subjects that created a sense of that which was warm, sympathetic, and romantic, he was a leading artist of his time painting lush landscapes, figures, and still life. Other subjects such as his industrial scenes and cityscapes had elements of social realism and were painted with a heavier brush than his other works. He was especially focused on the human figure, and many of them seemed dreamlike in filmy dresses reclining in landscapes. Kroll was born in New York City in 1884. He first studied at the Art Students League under John H. Twachtman, and in 1904 entered the National Academy School, winning the Academy's premier award in 1908. To earn money, he worked as a janitor and did mechanical drawing. He traveled to Paris in 1908, where he studied at the Academie Julian as a student of Jean-Paul Laurens, and exhibited at some of the major Paris exhibitions. While in Paris, he came under the influence of the Impressionists and was especially taken with the works of Paul Cezanne. When Kroll returned from Europe in 1910, he mounted a one-man show of his Parisian work. The exhibition was a critical and financial success. He became an instructor at the National Academy and also taught at the Maryland Institute (1919-23), the Art Institute of Chicago (1924-25), and The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1929-30). Kroll began to paint views of New York in 1918, a subject that fascinated him for the rest of his life. George Bellows, who not only became a friend but also exerted a strong influence upon Kroll's work, was an admirer of his art. Through Bellows, Kroll was introduced to the Eight and began exhibiting with them at the MacDowell Club. He also traveled to paint including to Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts; Monhegan Island in Maine; and in 1917, he joined his friends Robert Henri, and George Bellows in Santa Fe, New Mexico. During the 1930s, he worked for the WPA on murals for the Department of Justice Building. Kroll maintained an apartment at 253 West Forty-second Street in Manhattan, from which he painted several views of New York scenes. He died in New York City in 1974.

LEON KROLL Study for "Cape Ann." Oil and charcoal on board, circa 1934-35. 457x603 mm; 18x23 3/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Provenance: E. & A. Milch, Inc., New York; private collection, New York; Christie's, New York, sale 3727, April 2, 2015, lot 107; private collection, New York. This work is a study for the same-titled 1934-35 oil painting by Kroll (1884-1974) now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. According to the Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, where there are a number of works by Kroll, the artist, "Was one of this country's most productive and successful artists of the 20th century. A well-regarded teacher and the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions during his life time, Kroll was also a central figure in Cape Ann's summer art colony for many years. Kroll was born in New York and studied at the Art Students League under John Twachtman and at the National Academy of Design. Between 1908 and 1910, Kroll studied in Paris at the Académie Julian; during these years, Kroll discovered Paul Cézanne, the influences of whom are readily apparent in early works. Upon returning to America, Kroll's work was exhibited in 1913 at the Amory Show. By the 1920s he had begun teaching, at the National Academy of Design and at the Art Institute of Chicago. During the 1930s Leon Kroll and his wife Geneviève (whom he had met in France) began spending time in Gloucester's Folly Cove neighborhood, not far from the Babson Farm Quarry (known today as Halibut Point). In 1944 they purchased a property there, and for the rest of their lives divided their time between Cape Ann and New York. The Krolls and their daughter, Marie-Claude, quickly formed friendships with many of the other artists living and working in the area including Paul Manship, Walker Hancock, Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios and George Demetrios."

          Dec. 05, 2022

Leon Kroll (American, 1884-1975) Country Scene

          Est: $25,000 - $40,000

Leon Kroll (American, 1884-1975) Country Scene Signed 'Leon Kroll' bottom center right; also with (multiple) 'Estate of the Artist' stamp on stretcher verso, oil on canvas 36 x 48 (91.4 x 121.9cm) Provenance ACA Galleries, New York, New York. Acquired directly from the above in 1984. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold and Sandy Rifkin, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Note Leon Kroll was born in 1884 in New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League with John Henry Twachtman and at the National Academy of Design, where he later taught. He attended the Académie Julian in Paris, studying with French Academic painter Jean-Paul Laurens before returning to the United States. Greatly influenced by George Bellows and Robert Henri, Kroll maintained a realist style throughout his career, commenting in a letter in 1951: “even the so-called nonobjective artists inevitably use subject matter. I find their subject matter uninteresting and limited. Without copying nature, which is impossible anyway, selection can be made for emotional or any other expression of the infinite variety provided by life and nature." Best known for his luxurious nudes, Kroll also painted city scenes, landscapes, still lifes and figurative works, sometimes painting on a grand scale for public murals. His work is included in major museum collections like the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and important murals grace the Department of Justice Building in Washington, D.C. and the Worcester Memorial Auditorium in Massachusetts. The wax-lined canvas in overall fair to good condition, with a nicely preserved texture, and fresh colors. Examination under UV light reveals broad retouching along all four edges of the work, especially prominent along the top, bottom and left outer edges. With accompanying, broad, inpainting at bottom center, bottom right corner (on each side of the bush, the nearby people being intact). Some more restoration at upper right quadrant, and center right (the latter being relatively minor: most likely inpainted flakes). Some more uptop, at upper center above the mountain. The latter is mostly intact; save for two spots on its left-hand side. Evidence of repair in the sky at upper left corner. The left handside is otherwise largely untouched. See Specialist's pictures for more details. Frame: 42 1/2 x 54 1/2 in.
