      May. 23, 2014

STEFAN KRUCKENHAUSER (1905-1988) 'Kurzschwingen (Wedeln)' (Parallel Turn), 1950s

      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

Vintage silver print 23,5 x 12,5 cm (9.3 x 4.9 in) Photographer's stamp and various handwritten notations in unknown hands on the reverse LITERATURE Österreichischer Berufsschilehrerverband (ed.), Österreichischer Skilehrplan, Salzburg 1956, ill. 66; Friedrich Fetz/Elisabeth Hagen/Gerhard Ruedl (eds.), Skipionier Stefan Kruckenhauser, Innsbruck 2000, p. 70; Kurt Kaindl (ed.), Stefan Kruckenhauser. In weiten Linien. Das fotografische Lebenswerk, Salzburg 2003, p. 51; cat. FIS Landesskimuseum Werfenweng/ Galerie foto-forum Bozen, Ski- und Fotopionier Stefan Kruckenhauser. Fotografien und Fotovorlagen zum Österreichischen Skilehrplan, Salzburg 2004, p. 35. It is hard to determine in which of his two roles - photographer or skiing teacher - Stefan Kruckenhauser was more successful: his early photography volumes, such as Das Bergbild mit der Leica (Mountain Photography Using Leica), became benchmarks of Alpine photography, while his architectural volume Verborgene Schönheit (Hidden Beauty) influenced the style of an entire generation of amateur photographers, contributing vastly to the popularity of 35 mm photography in Austria. As early as 1955, the Leitz Company presented Kruckenhauser the M3 no. 700,000, acknowledging his outstanding contributions to the field of photography. As a skiing teacher and movement theorist, the "father of the parallel turn" also influenced the ski-ing style of millions of winter sport enthusiasts around the world. The present photograph is the printer's copy of Illustration 66 of the Österreichischer Schilehrplan (Austrian Skiing Syllabus) published in 1956. The publication united Kruckhauser's passions - he was responsible both for the athletic instructions and for the photographic illustrations and design. The book proved an enormous success, was translated into seven languages and reached a print run of 120,000 copies in 14 editions. Editorial notes and the customs stamp on the reverse of the print demonstrate that this copy was used for at least one of the translations of the syllabus as well.
