Krüger sculpsit Beras:" below in the printing plate. Date: 18th century Description: The portrait shows Joachim Heinrich Campe (1746-1818) as an antique bust in half-profile. His name is held by a laurel ribbon, a sign of the 'Poeta Laureata', for Campe burned himself into the memory of German studies especially as an educator who wrote the first literature specifically for children.       Johann Christian Krüger (1733 Szczecin - 1791 Berlin): Portrait of the Prussian military physician Johann Leberecht Schmucker (1712 Magdeburg - 1786 Berlin), surgeon and personal physician of Frederick the Great, bust in three-quarter profile to the left in medallion, 18th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper, mounted on Paper Date: 18th century Description: Schmucker provided an innovation in the treatment of inflamed wounds: He used cold water compresses (Formentia frigida) soaked in wine vinegar, saltpetre and sal ammoniac. His successor Theden later developed this treatment method further. He also refined the surgical instruments, which were still far too large at the time. The philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote in a letter on 18 January 1766: "Herr Schmucker; that is the name of the person who is in charge of my linckes; he is making every effort to remove the so-called hardened barley grain, he seems to be succeeding, I am impatiently awaiting the day of my departure, and I shall not lack the courage to travel alone in order to complete the end of my description of my journey". Inscribed below the medallion with the sitter's name, signed below on the right.
