  • NIKOLAI KRYMOV RUSSIAN OIL PAINTING ON WOOD PANEL
    Jun. 29, 2024

NIKOLAI KRYMOV RUSSIAN OIL PAINTING ON WOOD PANEL

    Est: $100 - $150

Nikolai Petrovich Krymov, Russian, 1884 to 1958, oil painting on a wood panel depicting a house with a red roof surrounded by greenery. Signed in Cyrillic and dated 1932 lower left. Unframed. Nikolai Krymov Russian and Soviet painter and teacher. Artist of the RSFSR 1956, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts 1949. Born into the family of the artist P. A. Krymov, who painted in the manner of the Wanderers. If in his early works Krymov was fond of symbolism with its characteristic mystery in his paintings, and tried his hand at primitivism and impressionism, then in his later creative period he still leaned towards classical landscape. At the same time, he began to increasingly draw landscapes from memory or invent them, although before that he loved to draw what charmed him during his next walk or trip. Katalog-rezone. Zhivopis, grafika, teatr, Moscow, Iskusstvo-XXI vek, 2009, p. 69, No. 111, illustrated and listed. Nikolai Krymov's landscape Before the Rain, now offered for auction, marks one of the most important stages in the artist's oeuvre. The work was painted in 1911, when his studies at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture had come to an end, and Krymov, already a fully-fledged painter, widely known and enjoying public recognition, was selected to represent the achievements of contemporary Russian art at an international exhibition in Rome alongside Alexander Benois, Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, Evgeny Lanceray, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Igor Grabar and others. Krymov was himself something of a "Roman" by then, fascinated as he was by the classical landscapes of the 17th century. His ideal, somewhat theatrical landscapes, with their symmetrical wide-branching treetops, are inspired by the classical tradition and call to mind the outstanding masters of the early 17th century who worked in Rome -- Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet. By making use of this stylistic canon and synthesising it with the decorativeness of a tapestry, the naivete of primitive art and the conventions of a theatrical scene, Krymov achieves a surprisingly modern effect in the composition of Before the Rain. He is no longer in the least dependent on the Russian school of landscape painting, spurning all literal adherence to nature, and reinvents his landscape afresh, combining his observations from real life with distinctly ornamental principles. This will subsequently come to be the hallmark of an artist who instructed his pupils: "Never paint a picture from studies. Paint the studies, examine nature so as to get to know it, but, when starting on the painting, put them right away and paint from inside yourself." It comes as no surprise that, after seeing Krymov's works, the eminent Russian art historian Pavel Muratov wrote in 1910: "Particular attention should be paid to this young artist by those who have an interest in the future of Russian landscapes. His works definitely belong to a new era in our landscape painting already." Before the Rain shows a kind of "Russian Arcadia", in which to the ideal harmony of a natural scene is reflected by the clear, balanced, classical structure of the composition, the spatial construction of which is based on an alternation of light and dark masses of landscape, the sharpness of the outlines of the trees, the applique like quality of the colour planes and the use of a particular colour effect to convey a sky before a rainfall whereby it looks "condensed". Authenticity has also been confirmed by the expert I. Geraschenko. Related literature: For a pencil study for the present lot, see the catalogue raisonnéNikolai Krymov, zhivopis', grafika, teatr, Moscow, Isskustvo, 2009, p. 239, No. 1112, illustrated. Nikolai Krymov's Landscape with Cows is representative of this remarkable painter's best creative period, a time when he worked with members of the Blue Rose group. Subtle, poignantly lyrical artist and creator of a unique style, Krymov entered the history of Russian art as one of its most original landscapists. When capturing the state of nature in landscape he is without parallel in Russian 20th century figurative art. The state of silence that is Krymov's alone, with its special crystalline tenor and exquisite interplay of areas of colour, lends to the artist's work a unique atmosphere of 'associations'. In her monograph on the artist Valentina Byalik wrote: "Of the Blue Rose artists Krymov seemed the most lyrical and the most realist. The tranquil, balanced harmony and silence that reign in his pictures are not mere observation of natural conditions. Perhaps the thought was creeping into the artist's mind that this kind of idyll is to be short-lived, that a long life is not destined to be this serene. Then again, the Blue Rose artists were also inspired by the genius of Mikhail Vrubel and the creative work of Viktor Borisov-Musatov, who had made an early departure." This intimate piece may be placed with confidence alongside the artist's best creations. The perfection of the composition, the accents of colour, and the extraordinary beauty of the way Krymov uses paint all serve as clear confirmation of this judgement.
