      Est: £10,000 - £15,000

Konstantin Kryzhitsky, Russian 1858-1911 Autumn in Crimea; oil on canvas, signed in Cyrillic and dated 'K. Kryzhitskii / 1891.' (lower left), 66.7 x 47.8 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 29 November 2021, lot 24. Note: Kryzhitsky enjoyed the patronage of the well-known family of the leading military commander, General Raevsky. The artist was invited to the Raevsky's estate in the Crimea, 'Karasanne', which was renowned for its exotic gardens, parks and orangeries. Born in Kiev, Kryzhitsky perfected his nascent talent at the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg from 1877 to 1884. Studying landscape painting under Mikhail Klodt (1832-1902), a founding member of the Peredvizhniki [Itinerants], Kryzhitsky achieved the rank of Artist of the First Class and was subsequently made an Academician in 1889. From 1879 onwards, Kryzhitsky frequently exhibited at the Academy, but also abroad, most notably at the International Exhibition in Munich in 1909 where he was awarded a gold medal for his composition Frosty Morning [Moroznoe utro]. He was particularly famed for his landscapes which drew together the varied lands, dramatic skies and expansive vistas of his native country and its surrounding regions, and which were acquired by both Emperor Alexander III and Pavel Tretyakov. For another, smaller, view in Crimea, taken by the artist, see Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 11 June 2008, lot 19 ( £43,250).
