      • Yeoh Choo Kuan (b. 1988) Baby, You're Gonna Miss That Plane, 2014
        Jan. 14, 2024

Yeoh Choo Kuan (b. 1988) Baby, You're Gonna Miss That Plane, 2014

        Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

Yeoh Choo Kuan lives and works in Kuala Lumpur. His work is an exploration of the possibilities through mark-marking. He has explored a variety of themes including domesticity, sexuality, the human body, as well as death and the subconscious. His early autobiographical works illustrate the purging of unrest and hidden emotions left by traumatic experiences through mark-making on painted imageries. His approach had since shifted toward gestural abstraction with highly textured strokes, which is referred to as his self-coined “Fleshing Abstraction” — a synthesis of disintegration set in contrast as the tension and forces are weighted on the oil surfaces. Informed by distinctive visual languages accumulated over the course, he is currently drawing inspiration from nature to discover the potential of landscaping and pictorial means. His solo exhibitions include What Makes A Mountain (2023), Today's Special, Richard Koh Fine Art, Gillman Barracks, Singapore (2020), Streaming Mountain (2019) held at Richard Koh Fine Art, A Day And Forever, Art Basel Online Viewing Room, Richard Koh Fine Art, Hong Kong (2020). Group exhibitions include Art Basel Hong Kong 2023, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), Hong Kong, China (with Richard Koh Fine Art), Gestures of Landscape, Richard Koh Fine Art, Gilman Barracks, Singapore (2022), In Our Own Frame: 15th Year Celebration, Richard Koh Fine Art, Kuala Lumpur (2020), Malaysia, VOLTA 14, Basel, Switzerland, (2018), and Art Central 2018, Richard Koh Fine Art, Hong Kong (2018), The Unreal Deal - Six Decades of Malaysian Abstract Art, Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery (2017).

        Mar. 19, 2023

Yeoh Choo Kuan (b. 1988) Fog Disruption, 2018

        Est: RM15,000 - RM25,000

It's a mystical optical play, enigmatic and fresh, a cacophony of fragile vertical lines, differently coloured in stages and with balms of ink-like splotches. Landscapist and imbued in Nature, fine delicate textures create a certain mood from this propensity for "fleshing abstraction", as the artist Yeoh Choo Kuan labelled his aesthetic interventions. As he intoned, generally: "I want to create a landscape that is charging with convergence of colours, a diversity." Nothing superficial or physical. But some sort of lyrical happenstance divulged by Nature, through layers and layers of consciousness. Dematerialised forms. A fortuitous glimpse caught in a walk by the woods? Yeoh Choo Kuan became an abstract acolyte after a chance visit to the Pompidou Centre in Paris in 2011, being exposed to the works of Cy Twombly, Mark Rothko and Constantin Brancusi, among others. Educated at Dasein College of Art, Kuala Lumpur (2010), he held his first solo, Private Sentiment, at HOM Art Trans in KL in 2012, after which he joined Richard Koh Fine Art, where he had few solos (2017, 2019 etc). He also had a solo, Lights, at Tang Contemporary Art in Bangkok (2018) and A Day And Forever solo at the 2020 Art Basel Hong Kong. His works will be exhibited in the prestigious Art Basel Hong Kong 2023.
