Ludvík Kuba Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1863 - d. 1956

Ludvík Kuba (April 16, 1863 in Podebrady, Bohemia – November 30, 1956 in Prague) was a Czech landscape painter, musician, writer, professor in the Academy of Fine Arts. He was a representative of the Late-Impressionism and he collected folk traditions.

Ludvík Kuba studied to play the organ and privately learnt drawing from Bohuslav Schnirch and Karel Liebscher. He was accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts and educated in the studio of Max Pirner (1891–93). Then he studied at Académie Julian in Paris (1893–95) and the school of Anton Ažbe in Munich (1895-1904). He then devoted his life to painting, collecting folk songs (e.g. Slovanstvo ve svých písních - "Slavonic peoples in their songs" recorded 4000 songs) and writing about folk traditions. His artistic style was highly marked with Impressionism and he mainly painted landscapes (his favourite was South Bohemia), portraits (e.g. Josef Svatopluk Machar) and still-lifes (e.g. Red Begonias).

Ludvík Kuba showed artistic inclinations since childhood. It first manifested itself in music when he was learning to play the violin and the organ, and he also contributed pictures to magazines. He also showed a strong feeling for the study of ethnography and studied at the AVU with Max Pirner. Visits abroad brought tones of impressionism and expressionism into his paintings. He also painted a large number of self-portraits, on which he liked to try bolder colors. As he himself said - the painter always has himself at hand. The presented work can be placed in the 1930s, when his work shows a combination of darker contrasting tones in the background with a freer impressionistic-tuned handwriting and opalescent flashes of blue and green underpainting. Technique: oil, Signed: sign. upper right: L Kuba

Ludvík Kuba studied the Slavic peoples to learn about their music, musical instruments and customs. He tried to capture a comprehensive picture of the Slavic peoples with regard to the idea of Czech national revival, folk musical instruments (including their carved ornaments) also deserved attention in Cuba, he also noticed the occupation of the local inhabitants, whether it was a musician, a gravedigger, a shepherd or a passer-by . His notes also contain knowledge about religion, about wearing clothes in general, customs, songs and customs. In general, we can say that Ludvík Kuba, taking into account the above, was truly a Renaissance personality, which he sublimated in his book Reading about Bosnia and Herzegovina. Technique: oil, Signed: sign. lower left: Kuba
