Black Paintings. Zürich, Galerie Haas, 2007, ohne Seitenangabe. - Die Gruppe der Black Paintings ist eine umfassende Werkreihe, die Gary Kuehn bereits in den 70er Jahren begonnen und dreißig Jahre später weitergeführt hat. Charakteristisch für jene kraftvollen Bilder sind schwarze, in das Bildgeviert eingepasste Formen, die sich kontrastreich vor einem weißen Hintergrund abheben. "Ich sehe den Bildraum als einen Container und in dieser Hinsicht haben die Arbeiten, obwohl sie offensichtlich Bilder sind, durch ihren Herstellungsprozess auch Verbindungen zur Skulptur. [...] Sie sind konstruiert im Gegensatz zu gemalt. Das Schwarz ist mit einer Spritze vom Zentrum der gezeichneten Figur so aufgetragen, dass die Farbe zu den Rändern fließen kann, wo sie von einem dünnen, flexiblen Metallrahmen gestoppt wird." (Gary Kuehn, in: Black Paintings, Galerie Haas, 2007) Die zumeist elliptischen, unregelmäßigen Gebilde entstehen, indem der Künstler einen biegsamen Metallring in das von der Leinwand vorgegebene Rechteck einspannt und die so entstandene Schablone mit schwarzer Acrylfarbe füllt. Der pastose Farbauftrag hinterlässt dabei eine reliefartige Struktur. In den Black Paintings hat Kuehn eine einprägsame Ausdrucksform gefunden, mittels derer er das spannungsvolle Verhältnis zwischen den Gegensätzen Entfaltung und Begrenzung, Kreis und Viereck, Schwarz und Weiß, Fläche und Raum untersucht.
