Benda, Georges Kugel. Empiremode. 2 Original-Kostümentwürfe für die Bühne. Aquarell über Graphit. Je 32,5 x 25 cm. 1918. -- Ein Damenkostüm mit schwarzer Haube und einem langen, tief dekolletierten, gelben Chemisenkleid. Der schmale Rock des Seidenkleides läuft in einer langen Schleppe aus. Über die Schulter trägt sie ein langes, hellblaues Tuch mit kunstvollen Ornamenten. Der Mann ist in einen roten Gehrock und weiße, knielange Beinkleider gewandet, dazu trägt er einen Zweispitz. Um die Taille ist eine gelbe Schärpe gebunden. – Kleine Löchlein in den Ecken (alte Montierungsspuren). Ränder papierbedingt gebräunt. Leicht braunfleckig. Rechts oben je mit montiertem gestempelten Nummernschildchen.

Condition B+: water staining in lower right corner; minor creases and rippling in margins and image. Framed. Kugelmann-Benda, artist and scene decorator, was the grandson of George Kugelmann, the founder of Imprimerie Kugelmann. His press was known for being the printer of the French newspapers Le Gaulois and Le Figaro, as well as other important weekly and daily publications. Kugelmann-Benda followed in his grandfather's creative footsteps, with this playful image of Mistinguett being his most famous poster.

Pathé Frères Editeurs, [Paris.] Condition A / A-: creases and minor loss in margins; minor restoration and creases along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds. Although he designed a few posters, Benda was primarily a painter. His most well-known image was for Mistinguett, who happened to be a friend of Stacia Napierkowska, a dancer and an actress who was active during the silent-movie era. "L''Étoile du Génie" was a film about a a failing composer who turned to a struggling dancer for his muse. Using a simple color palette, Benda catches the dancer in a graceful moment.
