                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The title is unkindown. Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 3-3/4 x 5 in. This plate still has some life in it and etchings could be pulled from it. Very seldom does an original etching plate by an important artist ever reach the open market, as they usually are in institutional collections. Provenance: Kuhn Estate. It is difficult to get a good scan of this and the picture below isn't very good. He did not etch his initials or signatureinto the plate. I don't think he ever etched his signature into any of his plates although he sometimes would etch initials. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer. The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below is NOT for sale. Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints during which it was indicated that there were less than 50 impressions ever pulled from this plate. Original plates by major artists seldom reach the open market and it is remarkable to see a plate that had so few prints pulled from it. A must for the SERIOUS Kuhn collector.

                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) American artist. By now most of you know that we have most of what came from the Kuhn Estate that didn't end up in the collection of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian, Washington DC [paintings & drawings not included]. So when you see letters, documents etc. on the market offered by others those items most likely came from our collection. Offered here is a rare Walt Kuhn etching plate. The title is NOT KNOWN, approx. 5-7/8 x 3-1/4 in. Now here is the important part that makes this so RARE. Firstly, very few impressions were ever pulled from this plate. Secondly, any time an etching plate is offered for sale, no matter who the artist is, that is very uncommon. Plates usually are defaced after they have been printed from. We owned all of Kuhn remaining etching plates. It is almost impossible to get a picture/scan that will show clearly. VG.

The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. Insured shipping based on zone. In 1967 the Kennedy Galleries [NYC] held an exhibition of Walt Kuhn prints. The catalogue states that Walt Kuhn's prints are of the greatest rarity. Of certain subjects only one to six impressions exist. Others vary in number of impressions, but none exceed fifty of any subject. The catalogue also says - Walt Kuhn's position in the ranks of our foremost American painters has long been assured. What is less familiar to the general public - and indeed to many collectors and institutions - is his work in the graphic media. With the exception of a few examples shown during his lifetime, the greater portion of his prints has remained locked up and forgotten in a warehouse these many years. On the occasion of the first major exhibition of his paintings to be held in New York in several decades, it is our privilege to show the etchings and lithographs that place Walt Kuhn among the most venturesome and exciting graphic artists of the 1920s and 30s. Of the 50 etchings listed in the Kennedy exhibition 41 are in the 6 or less impressions category, with 9 known to have up to 50 impressions. WE ARE NOT SURE HOW MANY PRINTS WERE PULLED from it. Many of you already know that we own the original Walt Kuhn etching plates.

                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original metal etching plate, title unknown, c. 1920s , 5-3/4 x 4-5/8 in. Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, and after a period of study art in Europe, he returned to the US to work as a cartoonist; illustrator, and developing artist. Aware of the great surge of modernist artistic activity in Europe, he joined with others to encourage Arthur B. Davies to get behind the idea of bringing a great European modernist art show to the US, and traveled with Davies to Europe to select art for the occasion (which became the 1913 Armory Show). Negligee was probably done c. 1920 when Kuhn, Davies, and a few others in the US were experimenting with modernism as they developed their printmaking skills. Kuhn successfully continued printmaking and painting in a modernist mode for the next 30 or so years. VG.

Now here is the important part that makes this interesting. We were told by a college professor friend who was helping Brenda Kuhn [daughter of Walt kuhn] that Walt at the end of his life was making child-like works. We talked to Brenda on the phone about this and she told us that yes that her father was doing that in the last year or so before passing away BUT she said it was better if the public did not know this. This comes with the original old frame. NOTE: we do NOT think this was one of Kuhn's early works he did as a young boy. VG

Kuhn had the habit of keeping copies of letters sent to others, and actually signing them. This letter was his retained copy to the water dept. in Kennebunk & Wells, Maine, which also covered Ogunquit back then. Kuhn says that they didn't use their Maine cottage during the past season, water pipes not connected, therefore he did not pay a water bill. A day later the water dept. sends Kuhn a letters basically saying that if he had just sent them a letter before the billing to let them know he would not have gotten a bill. They cancelled the charge for 1935. Although this letter seems rather routine you should know that Walt Kuhn throughout his life was often a difficult person with others. By the 1940s, KuhnÃ

VG.

We talked to Brenda on the phone about this and she told us that yes that her father was doing that in the last year or so before passing away BUT she said it was better if the public did not know this.

The portrait photo of Kuhn shown below IS NOT for sale. WE ARE NOT SURE HOW MANY PRINTS WERE PULLED from this plate. Many of you already know that we own the original Walt Kuhn etching plates.

It is difficult to get a good picture of this plate. He did not etch his initials or signature into the plate, which was his normal practice. This is guaranteed to be an authentic Walt Kuhn plate without a time limit to the original purchaser. We will send a letter of guarantee and provenance to the buyer.

WALT KUHN [1877-1949]. American painter. An ORIGINAL COOPER etching plate. The title is "TOMS RIVER". Typical Kuhn style. Plate size 8 x 10 in.

RARE Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) Original metal etching plate

VG.

RARE Original Etching Plate - Walt Kuhn

                      Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Walt Kuhn (1877-1949) American artist. By now most of you know that we have most of what came from the Kuhn Estate that didn't end up in the collection of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian, Washington DC [paintings & drawings not included]. So when you see letters, documents etc. on the market offered by others those items most likely came from our collection. Offered here is a rare Walt Kuhn etching plate. The title is ADVICE, etched in 1915, approx. 4-1/4 x 2-1/4 in. Now here is the important part that makes this so RARE. Firstly, less than 6 impressions were ever pulled from this plate. The 1967 exhibition of Kuhn prints held at the Kennedy Galleries in NY identified this in their catalog. Secondly, any time an etching plate is offered for sale, no matter who the artist is, that is very uncommon. Plate usually are defaced after they have been printed from. We owned all of Kuhn remaining etching plates. It is almost impossible to get a picture/scan that will show clearly. VG
