Titled Precincts of the Hachiman Shrine at Fukagawa, from the series Famous Places in Edo, produced in September 1853. Interior of a Hachiman shrine in Fukagawa, Japan. Inscription: In the lower right corner of the work, we read “Kunitsuna ga,” which is most likely the signature of a young Utagawa Kuniteru II, talented pupil of the famous artist Utagawa Kunisada. Condition: Detailed impression and trimmed margins with material losses along the edges that have been reinforced with paper tape from the verso. Slightly faded colors and holes along the bottom margin. Creasing along the centerfold. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired in the 1990s at Galerie Zacke, Vienna. Old Galerie Zacke label on the front of the passepartout. Kuniteru Utagawa II (1830 – 1874) Kuniteru II Utagawa was born as Yamada Kunijiro in 1830. He was a pupil of Kunisada Utagawa (1786-1865). The subjects of his ukiyo-e designs show a bit of all genres that were common during the late Edo period - actor prints, sumo wrestlers, bijin-ga and views from the modernization and westernization of Japan. His works represent the ongoing changes in Japan from the old Edo to the Meiji era. Kuniteru's prints show traditional ukiyo-e scenes as well as images from the beginning industrialization of Japan. Published in 1868. 25.5 x 37.5 cm. Note: Utagawa Kuniteru II (1830-1874) was born Yamada Kunijirō 山田 国次郎 in Edo (Tokyo) and was a print designer, painter and book illustrator. He studied under Utagawa Kunisada I (1786–1865). He produced yakusha-e (actor pictures), bijinga (beautiful women pictures), fuzokuga (pictures of manors and customs), meisho-e (pictures of famous places) sumo-e (pictures of wrestlers), educational prints and, most famously, bunmei kaika-e (pictures of modernization) in a late Utagawa-school manner. He was known by various names, including the gago Ichiyōsai 一曜斎, Ichiyūsai 一雄斎, Yōsai 曜斎, Ichiransai 一蘭斎, and Kunitsuna II 国綱 (ニ代), Ichiransai Kunitsuna 一蘭斎国綱 and Ikkasai Kunitsuna. Before 1844 he may also have been known as Sadashige 貞重 and signed works with the name Ichiyūsai. He changed his name in 1865 to Kuniteru II.
