    • AN OIL ETUDE BY KUPRIYANOV
      Nov. 30, 2017

      AN OIL ETUDE BY KUPRIYANOV

      Est: $200 - $300

KUPRIYANOV MIKHAIL VASILYEVICH (RUSSIAN 1903-1991), [Fishing], c. 1950s, oil on board, 23.2 x 34.5 cm (9 1/8 x 13 9/16 in.), signed on verso LOT NOTES Kupriyanov was a Russian (Soviet) painter, graphic artist and caricaturist best known as one of the founding members of the Kukryniksy collective (so named after the collated names of its three members: Kupriyanov, Krylov, and Nikolai Sokolov). The Kukryniksy collective, founded in 1925, was enormously influential and renowned for their caricatures, especially for Krokodil, a Moscow satirical journal, as well as their book illustrations. In addition, members of the Kukryniksy were established individually — Kurpriyanov, for one, was a laureate of the Lenin (1965), National Prize of the USSR (1975), and five Stalin (1942, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951) awards. Born in 1903 in the small town of Tetyushi (now Tatarstan), he began making art at an early age. After studying at the Tashkent Central Arts Studios in 1920-1921, he entered the graphic arts department at the Moscow VKhUTEMAS (where he studied under Nikolai Kupreyanov). In 1929, Kupriyanov designed the decorations and costumes for Mayakovsky`s comedy Klop [The Bedbug], staged at the Meyerhold theatre. During the War, Kupriyanov worked primarily on anti-war caricatures, posters and leaflets, which were published in Pravda and TASS` OKNA (a World War II take on the 1920s ROSTA windows). In 1945, Kupriyanov, as a member of Kukryniksy, created several courtroom sketches from the Nuremberg trials. His work was frequently exhibited around Russia as well as abroad. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
