      TOYONOSUKE KUROZUMI (1908-1955) [OSAKA RAILWAYS / SHIROSAKI IN WINTER]. Circa 1935. 35x24 1/4 inches, 89x61 1/2 cm. Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears and minor creases at edges; Kurozumi worked for the Osaka National Railways in the 1930s, designing at least four or five posters for the company. The small number of his posters that have surfaced are classic Art Deco images. The simple, bold, stylized designs reflect his ability to give the "illusion of modernization through the use of ideographic forms" (Fraser p. 63). L'Affiche Art Deco p. 109.

Condition B+: repaired tear at bottom, through text, into image; expertly repaired tears at edges; minor creases in image; repaired pin holes in corners. Kurozumi worked for the Osaka National Railways in the 1930s. The small number of his posters that have surfaced are classic Art Deco images. The simple, bold, stylized images reflect his ability to give the "illusion of modernization" through the use of ideographic forms (Fraser p. 63). Advertising new schedules with more trains travelling to Sakurai and Wakayama, the artist here presents information in a minimal way; employing a station clock, crossing gates, and a plume of smoke from an engine.

      TOYONOSUKE KUROZUMI (1908-1955) [OSAKA RAILWAYS.] Circa 1935. 42x30 1/2 inches, 107x78 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some slightly affecting image; minor creases and abrasions in margins and image. Using flat colors, and cut-out images of locomotives, Kurozumi uses a simple technique to create an exceptional image. The text advertise the increase in fast trains between Osaka and Yamada. "Kurozumi resigned from the railway after the war and opened a photo shop in Kobe" (Fraser p. 63).

Condition B+ / A: repaired tears and abrasions in margins, some slightly affecting image; creases in margins and image. Taking a different approach in a different season, Korozumi depicts the wonders of spring, and the natural beauties of the mountains. The poster promotes discounts for group tickets on travel throughout Kyoto and most likely depicts lake Biwa. The elegantly dressed and very stylized hiker that Kurozumi depicts is relaxing from his mountain walk and enjoying a cigarette. With very little Western study having been done on pre-war Japanese Art Deco poster design, there is currently no available information on this extremely talented and versatile artist.

Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image; staining and minor restored losses in margins. Bisecting Japan's main Island, the Japanese Alps (a volcanic range) are ideal for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. This exceptional, stylized modernist image emerges out of the Osaka Art Deco school; it is a sophisticated combination of graphics and typography, and an incredibly rare Japanese Art Deco image. It advertises summer discount travel to the mountains (between July 11th and August 31st) on the Osaka Railway, wonderfully intriguing passengers with the lure of snow in summertime. "If you want mountains then the Northern Alps are the place--all routes have discount locomotive service."
