      Wilbur Kurtz (1882-1967) (American) “Pennsylvania Dutch Girl” watercolor and gouache on paper 11” x 8” signed and dated 1916 lower right excellent condition Wilbur Kurtz was a Georgia artist, historian, illustrator and writer born in Oakland, IL. He became a foremost authority on Old South Atlanta. He studied at DePauw University, Art Institute of Chicago, and with George Wilmer Browne. He lived in Atlanta, Georgia where he contributed articles and illustrations to Atlanta Constitution, Atlanta Journal. He founded the Pen and Brush Club of Atlanta and cofounder of the Atlanta Civil War Round Table. Kurtz was an honorary member of Atlanta Historical Society, a member of the Atlanta Symposium, and Atlanta Artists Association. His work is at Georgia’s Executive Center; the Woodrow Wilson Shrine at Staunton, VA; five murals in the National Bank of Abbeville, SC; a large proscenium arch decoration-in collaboration with Don Dubois-for the Macon, GA City Auditorium; six large murals for the Georgia exhibit at A Century of Progress Exposition, Chicago; a series of paintings of buildings which housed the Coca-Cola Company, Atlanta; the Coca-Cola Bottling Companies in Houston, TX and Atlanta, GA; Atlanta Women’s Club, Clark Howell School; Federal Reserve Bank; Atlanta Historical Society; Atlanta Chamber of Commerce; governors Mansion(mural), First Federal Savings and Loan, Piedmont Driving Club, advisor for the restoration of the Cyclorama, the Battle of Atlanta, at Grant Park. He was the artistic adviser and historian for “Gone with the Wind” (1939), hand selected by Margaret Mitchell; “Song of the South” (1946); and “The Great Locomotive Chase” (1957). After his first wife, Annie Laurie's death, Kurtz married Annie Rachel Pye (1895-1985) of Woodland, Georgia, in 1949.

Kurtz was a historian and artist whose knowledge of the Old South led Margaret Mitchell to personally select him as artistic director and illustrator for the 1939 film adaptation of "Gone with the Wind." His 1950 commissioned painting of the new Coca Cola Bottling Co. plant at 2800 Bissonnet Street in Houston has been a central landmark of mid-century industrial design since it was built in what was then the outskirts of Houston.

      Wilbur G. Kurtz (American/Georgia, 1882-1967), "Allatoona, October 5, 1864"-1966, watercolor on paper. Signed and dated lower right. Historical themed painting depicting a large group of soldiers boarding a train. Verso of work with typed note that reads "When General Corse at Rome, Ga., got the word the night of the 4th, that a contingent of Hood's Army was moving northward from Big Shanty to attack the Federal garrison at Allatoona, he dispatched a train-load of troops to reinforce it. The train returned to Rome for a furether addition to the garrison, which arrive above 8 A.M. of the 5th. Following then the arrival fo Gen. French's division of Gen. Stewarts Corp., which was deployed largely on the reidge to the left, or west of the rock cut. All his attempts to carry the Federal fortifications were failing. French withdrew his forces when he got word that Sherman had sent reinforcements to the aid of Corse's troops. Each side of the ridge, the rock cut between, was heavily fortified by earthworks and manned by the defending forces. Communication between the two was maintained by a bridge over the railroad in the rock cut." Framed 25.75" x 36.5". Provenance: From a Private Collection in Atlanta, Georgia.
