        Est: €2,100 - €2,800

Johanna Sibylla Küsel (around 1650 Augsburg - 1717 ibid.) after Jacques Callot (1592 Nancy - 1635 ibid.): The Passion of Christ, series of 12 sheets, before 1685, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Stamp: Verso Collector's stamp, Lugt no.: 982b. F. Bernstein. Langelsheim near Goslar. 20th century Inscription: General information: signed in the printing plate on the first sheet: "Johanna Sübylla Küslin fec. Aug. Vind.", all further sheets numbered at the bottom centre. Date: before 1685 Description: A series of 12 miniature paintings that run through the Passion cycle. Based on the "Little Passion" by Jacques Callot. The scenes are characterised by their richness of detail and dramatic structure. Architecture and shrubbery set the stage for the initial scenes and create or define space and depth. The eye is drawn through pillars and gates to set the stage for scenes of torture, such as the scourging or the crowning with thorns. In the final scenes, the spaces open up. The setting is shifted to the open landscape. The architecture recedes, revealing a sky that now appears dramatic. Rocks, hills and the cross erected by torturers force movement upwards. The large number of figures emphasises the dramatic nature of the events. Instead of a suffering Jesus, the Passion shows a radiant Jesus in every scene. Johanna Sibylla Küsel grew up in artistic circles. She was the daughter of an engraver and the niece of the famous artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1672, she copied the eleven etchings of Jacques Callot's "Nouveau Testament" in her father's workshop in technically perfect, meticulous work. This work made her famous and she went on to produce further engravings as copies of well-known paintings such as those by Adam Elsheimer. She assisted her husband, the artist Johann Ulrich Krauß, and helped him to become one of Augsburg's most respected engravers. How many of Krauß's works can actually be traced back to her would be worth investigating. The present series clearly demonstrates the engraver's artistic talent.
