      Jun. 17, 2021

POLONAISE DE CHOPIN OU BAL À L'HÔTEL LAMBERT.

      Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Drawing, brown ink wash over pencil, bluish grey laid paper, watermark (D&C Blauw); not signed. Stuck by corners. - The Polish musician playing the piano amid a large audience. Sketch similar (in reverse) to a 1859 watercolour preserved in the Poznan National Museum. Around 1840 "the name Hôtel Lambert came to designate a political faction of Polish exiles associated with Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, who had purchased the Hôtel Lambert [...] The Hôtel Lambert drew some renowned politicians and artists of the epoch, including [...] Frédéric Chopin [...] George Sand, Honoré de Balzac, Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt, Eugène Delacroix, and Adam Mickiewicz. In fact, Chopin's "La Polonaise" was composed expressly for the Polish ball held there every year" (Wikipedia). T. Kwiatkowski (Pultusk 1809-Avallon 1891) was a Polish painter; just as many Poles he emigrated to France after the failure of the November 1830 Uprising. He executed several portraits of Chopin, during his life but also after his death in 1849.

ANTON TEOFIL KWIATKOWSKI Pultusk 1809 - 1891 Avallon Polonaise de Chopin. Chopin am Klavier, umgeben von Zuhörern. Studie zum gleichnamigen, in mehrfachen Varianten ausgeführten Aquarell. In Braun lavierte Bleistiftzeichnung. Auf blaugrauem Bütten. 22 x 36,7 cm. • George Sand and Chopin on one and the same painting
      Apr. 06, 2014

George Sand and Chopin on one and the same painting

      Est: €300 - €700

DRAWINGS, WATERCOLOURS & GOUACHES - KWIATKOWSKI, Teofil (Polish 1809 - 1891). Meeting of Frédéric Chopin and George Sand (Aurore duDevant, born Dupin). 'Aquarel gouaché' on paper, heightened with gold, signed 'T. Kwiatkowski' (lower left), with 2 mounted pieces of paper with biographical information on the painter and inscribed with title 'Rencontre de F. Chopin et Aurore duDevant' (on the reverse), 11.3 x 15.3 cm. Ca. 1840. Nicely framed. M. Kwiatkowski portrayed his friend Chopin frequently, and in many ways. This painting shows an early encounter of Chopin and George Sand, with her daughter Solange, with the 'Tour de Philippe le Bel', a medieval tower in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, France in the background. Chopin and Sand met for the first time in 1836. According to Franz Liszt (who quotes Ferdinand Hiller) Sand didn't make a very good first impression on his fellow composer: "what an unpleasant woman, that Mrs Sand! Is she really a woman? I allow myself to doubt". This appearance didn't prevent her to establish romantic relationships with Musset, Balzac, Hugo, Stendhal, Lamartine, Delacroix, Liszt and many others. Chopin obviously changed his mind in 1838 and their relationship lasted until two years before he died. Chopin wrote his best works during the ten years they were together. His close friend Eugène Delacroix was introduced to him by George Sand and he is the man that gives legendary proportions to the double portrait by Kwiatkowski. Delacroix painted them together but never finished the portrait. After his death the new owners cut the painting in two, possibly because two paintings would sell for a higher price than one, and the novelist and the composer were separated forever: Chopin is in the Louvre now, Sand in the Ordrupgaard Museum in Copenhagen. But here, on this romantic little painting from their palmy days in the south of France, they will stay together for good
