A major exhibition of 323 works at the Galeries Georges Petit had firmly established his reputation in 1908 and this commission came a few years later in 1911.The four funnel France was built in St Nazaire, France in 1911 and was the most lavishly decorated liner of the day - it accommodated 517 First Class passengers from a total of 1623. Known as the Versailles des mers or the Chateau de l'Atlantique, the decor throughout was opulent gilded Louis XIV, expressed so grandly in the two tiered First Class Dining Room with its magnificent sweeping staircase ending in the centre of the salon - indeed, it was said that no self respecting woman would enter by any other way.It was for this staircase that La Touche painted this panel. Throughout his life he had had a love affair with the Palace and gardens of Versailles: painting several large canvases of beautiful women alighting from carriages and stepping into brightly coloured barges and gondolas. As early as 1895 he painted a suite of Quatre Saisons for the Salle de Mariage in the Mairie at St Cloud and it is here that La Touche used the format for this panel in his depiction of Spring. To echo the opulence of its setting, he has the viewer looking up at the central figure as she is helped from her carriage towards a waiting barge, complete with musical ensemble - she appears to be of royal standing as her entourage bow to show her status.The France was sold in 1933 and broken up by Dunkirk Breakers in 1934 - the whereabouts of this painting were unknown until its discovery 25 years ago.Photograph:French Line, S.S. Note: This piece is a wonderful example of the work of the 19th-century French painter Gaston La Touche. The subject-matter of this painting, as an intimate depiction of a maternal scene, recalls the work of seventeenth-century European genre painters, whilst its execution displays the influence of artists such as Jean-Antoine Watteau and François Boucher. La Touche’s style also exhibits the influence of the Impressionist movement which was developing around him, as is evident in the free and loose application of paint, imbuing the scene with a sense of spontaneity and informality which is evident throughout much of the artist’s work. Despite combining these influences, this work exhibits La Touche’s own unique and instantly recognisable style which is evident, for example, in his liberal use of vibrant yellow tones in the window. Interestingly, the chair in which the mother is depicted as sitting in is still in the family's collection. La Touche was a member of the Societé National des Beaux Arts and the Societé des Artistes Francais, and was awarded the Legion d’honneur in 1900. His works are in prestigious collections around the world, such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Art Institute in Chicago, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. A particularly impressive example of La Touche’s work is on display at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. We are grateful to Roy Brindley and Selina Baring Maclennan for their assistance in cataloguing this lot, which is to be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné currently in preparation. "Gaston La Touche est né à Saint-Cloud en 1854 et restera fidèle à la ville où il occupe un atelier, bâti dans sa propriété du 31 rue Dailly, jusqu'à sa mort en 1913. Artiste autodidacte (ses parents sont propriétaires d'une petite épicerie à Saint-Cloud), il apprend seul à dessiner et à peindre ; Edouard Dantan lui donne quelques leçons de dessin. Gaston La Touche se rapproche des artistes de la 'Nouvelle Athènes' et devient l'ami d'Edouard Manet. Il se lie aussi avec Emile Zola dont il illustre L'Assommoir. Aux alentours de 1890, il rencontre Felix Bracquemond qu'il considère comme son vrai maître. Il adopte alors les singeries, les fêtes galantes et autres sujets 'à la Watteau' inspirés du XVIIIe siècle. Dans sa palette dominent les tonalités claires, presque opalescentes, qui font son succès et lui valent des récompenses officielles au Salon des Artistes français." This work is by the 19th-century French artist Gaston La Touche. This painting was clearly heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement which was developing around La Touche, alongside earlier, 18th-century French artists such as Jean-Antoine Watteau and Franҫois Boucher. This influence is evident in La Touche’s use of small, energetic brushstrokes to apply sharply contrasting tones of paint, creating a powerful evocation of the play of sunlight in a landscape. This outdoor scene also recalls the pastoral settings of the fêtes galantes depicted by Watteau and Boucher, which La Touche himself interpreted to popular acclaim. La Touche was a member of the Societe National des Beaux Arts and the Societaire des Artistes Francais, and was awarded the Legion d’honneur in 1900. Puis littéraire et intellectuelle, avec Emile Zola, à la suite de Manet, emportant son art dans un naturalisme puissant durant les premières années de sa riche carrière. Car deux périodes bien distinctes se détachent dans l'œuvre de notre artiste. La première, radicalement naturaliste dont notre tableau constitue un glorieux exemple, s'oppose à une seconde qui doit son existence à l'intervention de Félix Bracquemond. Sous les conseils de ce dernier, Gaston La Touche s'aventure dans des coloris plus lumineux et des sujets plus idéalisés, librement inspirés de Watteau ou de Boucher, peut-être plus décoratifs mais assurément plus commerciaux à partir des années 1890. Notre tableau, L'Enjôleux, tel qu'il fut titré par l'artiste, constitue l'une des œuvres majeures de sa première manière, celle foncièrement ancrée dans ce naturalisme pictural alors en vogue jusqu'à la fin des années 1880. Rares sont les œuvres de Gaston La Touche de cette période qui soient parvenues jusqu'à nous. Présentée au Salon de 1883, cette toile figure une jeune paysanne, dont le travail est interrompu par l'intervention galante d'un jeune homme. Tentant d'attirer son attention et de la séduire aux moyens d'une attitude faussement décontractée et d'une taquine petite branche, notre héros rural semble, par son exercice de charme improvisé, avoir réussi à emporter l'agrément de la jeune femme dont le léger rictus et le regard fuyant constituent des indices présageant un amour naissant. L'œuvre nous parait s'inscrire en profondeur dans la réalité esthétique et intellectuelle de son temps. Elle fait figure, en rassemblant l'ensemble des éléments fondateurs du mouvement pictural naturaliste, de témoignage pertinent de ce que la peinture a pu être au tournant des années 1880, dans son développement parallèle à celui des envahissants mais non moins iconiques impressionnistes. Ce mouvement naturaliste, considéré comme une branche héritière de l'académisme en peinture, revendique néanmoins une touche libre et lumineuse. Il investit avec passion les sujets contemporains et délaisse l'Histoire au profit de l'anecdote et des destins sociaux de modèles anonymes mais pourtant si représentatifs, presque allégoriques. Gaston La Touche, par cette œuvre, s'invite à la table des pionniers de ce courant, tels Lhermitte, Roll ou encore Bastien-Lepage, " petit-fils de Courbet et de Millet " selon Zola. Notre toile permit également à l'artiste l'expression d'une allégeance aux grands maîtres de la peinture, implicitement affirmée par cette référence claire au tout juste redécouvert ?Johannes Vermeer. Et finalement, Gaston La Touche parvient à provoquer un sourire inspiré à ses spectateurs, qui, dans une deuxième lecture de l'œuvre, découvriront le mimétisme animal de cette scène délicieuse, tant les deux canards au premier plan semblent, au même titre que leurs compagnons de châssis, être rentrés dans un doux jeu de séduction. The Masquerade Ball - Grand Opera House in Paris Signed lower right Oil on panel, 77.6 x 55.4 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands, thence by descent to the present owners Note: Gaston de La Touche, painter, watercolourist, and pastelist, was born in Saint-Cloud, Paris in 1854. His earliest paintings from the 1880s were grim scenes from the daily lives of miners and laborers - perhaps a nod to the social Realism of contemporaries, like writer Emile Zola. In the late 1880s, his friend Felix Bracquemond prompted him to discard his earlier style and to use the colours favoured by the Impressionists. He gradually and steadily moved away from Realism toward a greater sense of Idealism, which became a hallmark of his oeuvre and set him apart from the Impressionists. He created luminous and charming works of parks, gardens, nymphs, and fêtes-chamêptres, revealing an underlying loyalty to French artists of the eighteenth century, such as Fragonard and Watteau. This painting depicts a lively scene in the Paris Opera House, where elegant visitors stroll up the imposing staircase. As with La Touche's Impressionist contemporaries, like Degas, the setting focuses on a behind-the-scenes view of Parisian performers. La Touche's work is represented, among others, in Musée d'Orsay (Paris) and the Singer Museum (Laren). Faults or imperfections are not recorded in the lot description.
