JOHN LA FARGE Boy Casting off a Hawk. Watercolor and gouache over pencil on paper, circa 1884-85. 134x121 mm; 5 1/4x4 3/4 inches. Signed in ink, lower left recto. Provenance: Moore's Art Gallery, New York, with a partial label; private collection, New Jersey; Henry B. Holt, Essex Fells, New Jersey; Stephen M. Lovette, Washington, D.C.; William Vareika Fine Arts, Ltd., Newport, Rhode Island; private collection, Massachusetts; private collection, Chicago. Exhibited: Moore's Art Gallery, New York, March 26-27, 1885; "John La Farge (1835-1910) American Artistic Genius and Renaissance Man," William Vareika Fine Arts, Ltd., Newport, Rhode Island, August 28-November 30, 2009. Published: Yarnall, "New Insights on John La Farge and Photography," The American Art Journal, volume XIX, number 2, 1987, page 73 (illustrated). Many of the works in the Moore's Art Gallery, New York, auction in 1885 were replicas of pictures that La Farge had sold the previous year in his forced sale at the auctioneers Ortgies & Co., New York. The artist considered making copies both a substitute for keeping works that he did not really want to sell and as a potential future source of income. The current work is based on a watercolor sold in 1884 at Ortgies & Co. (W. 1880.14) that dates from 1880 according to the auction catalogue. Both are based on drawings executed around 1865 as La Farge worked on illustrations for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's The Skeleton in Armor, a ballad set in Newport, Rhode Island. The backdrop represents Brenton's Cove, Newport, prominently featured in the poem. La Farge's other drawings of the subject are now in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick, Maine, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts.

John LaFarge ANTIQUE SIGNATURE on a slip of paper approximately 1 inches high by 3 1/2 inches wide Noted American Artist, Illustrator & Author. Signed In Ink: "JNO LAFARGE." JOHN LAFARGE (1835-1910) was a noted American artist whose career spanned illustration, murals, interior design, painting, and popular books on his Asian travels and other art-related topics. La Farge is best known for his production of stained glass, mainly for churches on the American east coast, beginning with a large commission for Trinity Church in Boston in 1878, and continuing for thirty years. La Farge designed stained glass as an artist, as a specialist in color, and as a technical innovator, holding a patent granted in 1880 for superimposing panes of glass. That patent would be key in his dispute with contemporary and rival Louis Comfort Tiffany. In 1904, he was one of the first seven artists chosen for membership in the American Academy Of Arts & Letters. La Farge is venerated in the Episcopal Church, sharing a feast day of December 16, along with American architects Ralph Adams & Richard Upjohn. Between 1859 and 1870, La Fargo took up illustration, of Tennyson & Browning & and worked on children's magazine illustrations. In the 1870s, La Farge began to paint murals, which became popular for public buildings as well as churches. La Farge continued to create murals through his career, among his final works were six murals on the theme of eminent lawgivers, beginning with Moses. La Farge traveled extensively in Asia and the South Pacific, which inspired his painting. He visited Japan in 1886 and the South Seas in 1890 and 1891. In Hawaii in September 1890 he painted scenic spots on Oahu and traveled to the Island of Hawaii to paint an active volcano. In 1875, La Farge began experimenting with problems of shifting and deteriorating color, especially in the medium of stained glass. At this time, stained glass had not yet been widely adopted as a medium in the United States, making his early efforts critical to its success. His work rivaled the beauty of medieval windows and added new resources by his use of opalescent glass and by his original methods of layering and welding the glass, which created a sense of three-dimensionality. Opalescent glass had been used for centuries in tableware, but it had never before been formed into flat sheets for use in stained-glass windows and other decorative objects. La Farge filed a patent application in 1879, as "the first application of a new material [opalescent glass] to windows." He was granted patent no. 224,831 on February 24, 1880, for a "Colored-Glass Window", with technical details about manufacturing opalescent sheet glass and layering it to create windows. La Farge apparently introduced Tiffany to the new use of opalescent glass sometime in the mid 1870s, showing him his experiments. Sometime in the late 1870s or early 1880s, however, relations between the artists soured, probably due to a lawsuit between the two men over stain glass & colored glass manufacturing patent." The home was built in the period of 1890's to early 1900, when large and grand homes were being constructed along Queen street. The Stained Glass Window was incorporated and placed between the first and second grand staircase. George Meade Bowers was developing the city, and since it was less 100 miles away from Washington DC., other Congressmen and Senators followed suite. From the Berkeley County Historical Society, we have learnt that John LaFarge was in Martinsburg and designed a window for a Mausoleum in either the Old Norborne, or Old Greenhill Cemetery and also the windows of Calvari Methodist Church. The owner says that her grand father George Katz purchased the house ( The Bowerleigh ) from George Meade Bowers and lived there until the late 1960's. The owner was raised there and lived in town.
