HAIDA TRIBAL ART PRINT SERPENT BY DOUG LAFORTUNE

Doug LaFortune, born in 1953, native american artist residing in Tsawout First Nation, Canada. Haida is an indigenous group who have traditionally occupied Haida Gwaii, an archipelago just off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. A colored stonecut print of a mythical creature with bird, fish, and snake traits executed in the forms of traditional tribal design. Signed in the lower right. Titled Su-Ha-Kay in the bottom middle. Numbered 107 out of 130. White mat, black frame. Provenance: TC&TC The Collective and The Collection NYC. Collectible Native Ethnic Tribal Graphic Art. After attending school in Victoria, Doug completed a college course in Fine Arts. Shortly after, he worked in the logging industry on Vancouver Island for several years. A visit to Simon Charlie at his workshop in Koksilah, BC rekindled a desire to pursue the arts. Doug studied under Simon and broadened his range of work in the Coast Salish style. Some of Doug's top artistic accomplishments include a Salish Welcome Figure, presented to Queen Elizabeth at the Opening Ceremonies of the XV Commonwealth Games in Victoria, as well as a commission to paint a Thunderbird and Killerwhale Dance Screen backdrop to be used at the Lauwelnew Tribal School Cultural Village.

An incredibly striking, fantastical mask in the form of a human head with frogs for eyes and a frog peeking out of the mouth. The face is bright green with black hair and red lips and nostrils; the frogs each have red, human-like lips and black brows. Each frog has two round discs of iridescent abalone shell forming its eyes. Frogs are believed to bring good luck and fortune in many Northwestern indigenous cultures. Size: 9" W x 11.25" H (22.9 cm x 28.6 cm) The mask was created by Doug LaFortune, who was born in Bellingham, Washington, on August 25, 1953 and who is a member of the Coast Salish nation, which inhabits the southern region of British Columbia, Washington and Oregon.
