      JOLENE LAI (b. 1980) Hello Fish, 2011

      Est: RM12,000 - RM20,000

A traipse into an imaginary world from adolescent angst, creating a powerful dystopian scene from a kind of Theatre of the Absurd, with the protoganist(s), in kinky demeanour or attire, caught up in some Hitchcockian suspense and Alice In Wonderland awe, although the scene with a mixture of Pop Art Nouveau and anime looks innocuous enough. Shades of Edward Hopper and Paula Rego, sensitive and fragile. Singapore-born and bred Jolene Lai, based in Los Angeles, has become known for her whimsical concoctions that are unerringly disturbing and disquieting. Hello Fish hints at some childhood obsession ala Linus of Charlie Brown, in this case, a toy fish with legs that is privy to the innermost secrets of the girl with kinky red hair, a blouse with ruffles, a rainbow-studded pair of socks with longish toes. She is surrounded with, and presumably overwhelmed by, stacks of research-study materials. She had penned her thoughts then: “Growing up as an only child, I remember trying to fill the absence of busy adults with as much creative play time as I possibly could. I had several imaginary playmates…We played this, my friends and I, during many quiet weekend mornings.” Hello Fish was one of her early works in her first solo exhibition at Utterly Art in Singapore. Jolene Lai has gained a lot of traction since the now Los-Angeles-based gallery, Thinkspace, represented her in 2013, with solos After Midnight (2013) and Play (2014). She featured in Art Stage Singapore's SEA Platform under Galerie Sogan in 2014 (remember the woman on the slaughtering slab surrounded by figures with human forms and animal heads?), and then again in 2015. She was also represented in Art Taipei 2014, and SCOPE's fair in Miami Beach and New York. Her work as a digital production assistant from 2008-2010 including a year at the Refinery Creative helped hone her imaginative oeuvre. She graduated from the LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts in Singapore (2001-2004), with a Georgette Chen Arts scholarship (2012) and pursued Design Communications at UCLA from 2006-2008, having won the Laurel Hummel scholarship.
