Suzy LakeMAQUETTE: RE-READING RECOVERY #7, 1997Colour gelatin printEdition 2 of 7 20 ins x 16 ins; 50.8 cms x 40.6 cms Provenance:Courtesy the artist and Georgia Scherman Projects, TorontoNote:A recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2016, Suzy Lake is a groundbreaking photographer whose early 1970s work, which critiqued feminist tropes in the media, set the stage for much of the feminist and identity-based work that followed. Artists such as Cindy Sherman have cited Lake as an inspiration. Born in the US, but a resident of Canada since the late 1960s, Lake also works in performance, and uses drawing, painting and installation to extend a photograph’s intent. Her work resides in several public art collections, including the Albright Knox Art Gallery (Buffalo, New York), the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Sammlung Verbund (Vienna) and the Vancouver Art Gallery. In 2016, she was the winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award, and she will have a solo exhibition at the Ryerson Image Centre (Toronto) in 2017. From 2016 to 2018, her work will be included in the touring exhibition “The Feminist Avant-Garde of the 1970s,” curated by Gabriele Schor, which will visit the Photographers' Gallery (London, UK), the Museum of Modern Art (Vienna), Zum (Karlsruhe, Germany), Brno House of Arts, (Czechoslovakia) and the Stavanger Art Museum (Norway). She will also have a solo exhibition at her Toronto gallery, Georgia Scherman Projects, and the McMaster Museum of Art (Hamilton) in 2016. Estimate: $3,200–3,700

SUZY LAKE, R.C.A. UNTITLED mixed media on papersigned and dated '84 8 ins x 26 ins; 20.3 cms x 66 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoNote:Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1947, Suzy Lake is one of a pioneering group of visual artists to adopt performance, video and photography in order to explore the politics of body, gender and identity. Upon completing her studies she immigrated to Montréal in 1968. Almost ten years later, she completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University. She is largely self-taught in the fields of film, photography, video and performance art. Lake was Guido Molinari's studio assistant in the early 1970s, and was an active member of the Montréal artistic communities throughout that decade. She cofounded the artist-run avant-garde gallery Véhicule Art Inc. in 1972. Lake was profoundly influenced by the social and political movements of the 1960s and 70s. She is recognized for her large-scale photography, which reflects the politics of feminism and femininity, referencing the body as both subject and device. She is often compared to the prolific photographer Cindy Sherman for making appearances in her own art and manipulating her visual identity in order to address the constructs of fashion and beauty. Indeed, she practices a form of conceptual art that uses photography more as a means of communication and inquiry than a record of reality.Lake has had an extensive exhibition career, with successful shows in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Her work is represented in many public collections, including those of the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto); the Musee d'art Contemporain (Montréal); and the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo (New York). Most recently in 2014, a retrospective of her career was hosted by the Art Gallery of Ontario.
