Resembling overhanging wires, the end sprouts into dragonflies in flight, hovering menacingly like a drone attack, on what looks like the detritus of urbanisation, urban decay. Would any premeditated assault be rendered futile, since the rot has spread Ground Zero? Alphabets and random numbers may convey some semblance of literacy and by extension, progress, but lines of communication have become tangled in a crimson world of deceit and power-play, and Machines have overtaken Man. This Untitled work is from Ivan Lam's 911 Series from his After All These Years exhibition at Wei-Ling Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2007, looking at the ramifications of the shocking Twin Towers attack in New York, on Sept 11, 2001. Ivan Lam was accorded a survey exhibition of his 20 years of creative explorations by Wei-Ling Gallery in 2015. This was after his one-month residency in Dusseldorf, Germany, in February 2012. He had featured in Art Stage Singapore and Art Basel Hong Kong in 2013, and was commissioned by Louis Vuitton to make a painting for their collection. He had won the national-level award of the Asean Art Award in 2003, and was chosen among 10 finalists in the Sovereign Art Prize in Hong Kong. After a Graphic Design certificate at the University LKW Institute of Technology, KL (1994), he got his BFA from the Maine College of Art, United States (1998) and MA from the University of East London (2006).

It’s back to the conventional painterly surface here for Ivan Lam, a fast-rising contemporary artist known for his using industrial materials and more electronic-bent gizmos. This yellow-tinged work was done in 2003, the year he won one of the Malaysian-level prizes in the Philip Morris Asean Art Awards.Ivan Lam graduated with a Master’s in International Contemporary Art and Design Practice from the University of East London, Maine College of Art, USA, in January 2007, and BA in Fine Art (Full honours) in 1998, after his Graphic Design certificate from the Limkokwing Institute of Technology in 1994.He was one of the top 10 finalists for Hong Kong’s Sovereign Art Prize in 2006 and was commissioned by Louis Vuitton to create an artwork for their collection. It was in Portland, Massachusetts, that he had his first solo called Ins And Outs, in 1998. After three solos with Taksu, the first two in Kuala Lumpur and the last in Singapore, Ivan Lim came under the banner of Wei-Ling Contemporary Gallery, hitting off on the right note with After All These Years in 2007, then Panorama (2009), Together Alone (2011), MACHINES (2012), Cutting The Lines That Bind (2016) and Twenty, a major survey exhibition in 2014 of his 20-year career. On offer here is another example of his mastery in silkscreen printing technique on canvas illustrating an abstract floral motif in a minimal palette of red and green. A large and subdued floral motif dominates the beige-coloured canvas with a single plant placed vertically over it while a small green flower-patterned is located on the left centre edge of the canvas and a larger-sized floral shape in red is positioned at the upper right corner of the canvas. "An innovator, a fearless explorer and obsessive perfectionist-all qualities of a great artist in the making", Ivan Lam is one of the most popular contemporary Malaysian artists. He received his art education in University of East London, Maine College of Art, USA and Limkokwing Institute of Technology, Malaysia. Since returning from the United States, Lam has been establishing and inventing himself to become the epitome of Malaysian pop art where his work has been exhibited in various private and public galleries in Malaysia and abroad. Lam is one of the few artists who are sponsored by a paint company, Nippon for his paintings. An award-winning artist who has garnered numerous art awards both locally and internationally, he was the grand prize-winner for the sought-after Phillip Morris Art prize in 2003, and was most recently amongst the top 10 finalists in the Sovereign Art competition, in Hong Kong. He has been collected by both the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and Galeri Petronas and was the first and only Malaysian artist to be given a solo exhibition at Art Basel Hong Kong's inaugural fair in 2013. He is also the first and only Malaysian artist to have been commissioned by luxury designer Louis Vuitton to create an artwork for their collection. He has recently showcased a solo exhibition titled Ivan Lam: Twenty (December 2014 - March 2015) an important survey exhibition which documents 20 years of his career and artistic journey at Wei-Ling Gallery, The Gardens Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

Initially started as a printmaker in 1998, Ivan Lam uses the silkscreen technique "as a means to create works that dealt with colour fields and reflected international issues". In 2005, having mastered the silkscreen technique, he produced a new body of work titled CMYK series consisting of 10 pieces resulting in the artist being regarded as the country's most relevant contemporary printmaker. Illustrated here is an example of his mastery in screen print technique on black canvas depicting an abstract circular blue and brown shape with floral motifs in red, yellow and brown.
